How the Soak and the Stay Fit Together

Book the pools, sleep close by and walk back after the last soak.

  1. Pick your soaks first

Decide which pools you want: the lakefront spas in town, Hell's Gate at Tikitere or Secret Spot by the forest. Every Rotorua bathing ticket here offers free cancellation, so fix the dates first.

  2. Sleep near the main one

No Rotorua bathing ticket on this site includes transport. For the Polynesian Spa and Wai Ariki, a hotel on the lakefront means you can walk there and back.

  3. Soak late

The Polynesian Spa is open until 11pm with last pool entry at 10pm. Wai Ariki stays open until 10:30pm in winter and 11pm from November to April.

  4. Walk back to bed

From the hotels around Government Gardens it is a short walk back. Remove silver jewellery before you soak: the minerals tarnish it.

Lakefront, Eat Streat or the Hell's Gate Side?

Where you sleep decides which soaks you can walk to and which need a car or a shuttle.

Where to Stay

Where to Sleep for Rotorua's Hot Springs

Six areas matched to the soaks around them, with hotels that list their own hot pools.

For the hot springs, stay on the Rotorua lakefront. The Polynesian Spa is at 1000 Hinemoa Street and Wai Ariki at 1047 Whakaue Street, both on Lake Rotorua in the city, and no Rotorua bathing ticket on this site includes transport. A hotel around Government Gardens or at the lake end of Tutanekai Street lets you walk to both, soak until last entry and walk back. Stay on the east side, toward the airport, if Hell’s Gate is your main soak or you fly out early. Ngongotahā and the other lakes suit a quieter stay with a car.

How the soaks are spread out: the two big spas sit on the city lakefront. Hell’s Gate is at Tikitere, east on State Highway 30 past the airport, with a free shuttle from central Rotorua if you book it. Secret Spot’s cedar hot tubs are on Waipa State Mill Road beside the Whakarewarewa Forest, and its ticket does not include hotel pickup. Waikite Valley is about 30 minutes’ drive away.

Government Gardens and Hinemoa Street

This is the Polynesian Spa end of the lakefront, and the easiest base if you do not have a car. The spa is open until 11pm with last pool entry at 10pm, so a hotel here turns a late soak in the Deluxe Lake Spa into a short walk home.

  • Prince’s Gate Hotel dates to 1897 and stands opposite the Polynesian Spa and Government Gardens, with three thermally heated pools of its own.
  • Millennium Hotel Rotorua is next to the lake and the spa, with a heated indoor pool, a hot tub and a day spa.
  • Sudima Hotel Lake Rotorua is on the lakeshore beside the Polynesian Spa, with an outdoor pool and a 24-hour front desk.
  • Pullman Rotorua on Arawa Street has lake-view rooms and a 24-hour front desk.
  • Rock Solid Backpackers Rotorua on Hinemoa Street is the budget pick, within 10 minutes’ walk of the spa, with private or shared bathrooms.

See all stays in Rotorua.

Eat Streat and the lake end

The lake end of Tutanekai Street is Eat Streat, a covered strip of restaurants and bars, and Wai Ariki is close by on Whakaue Street. Stay here for Wai Ariki’s Restorative Journey, which is self-drive only, and for dinner on foot afterwards. Wai Ariki bathing is for guests aged 16 and over.

  • Novotel Rotorua Lakeside is at the lake end of Tutanekai Street, with a geothermal spa and hot pools, and is 10 minutes’ walk from the Polynesian Spa.
  • Regent of Rotorua Boutique Hotel on Pukaki Street is a block from the lake and lists Wai Ariki and the Polynesian Spa within a short walk. It has a private indoor geothermal mineral pool.
  • ibis Rotorua on Rangiuru Street is 3 minutes’ walk from the lake and about 15 minutes’ walk from the Polynesian Spa.
  • Haka House Rotorua is a hostel on Haupapa Street near Kuirau Park, with shared and private rooms.

Whakarewarewa and the Redwoods

South of the centre, by the Whakarewarewa Forest, this side suits a soak at Secret Spot, whose private cedar tubs are filled with heated fresh spring water. You will drive to the lakefront spas from here.

  • Rydges Rotorua is on the edge of the Redwoods forest, with a geothermally heated pool and two hot tubs.
  • Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park has hot pools, private rooms and self-contained units, 10 minutes’ walk from Whakarewarewa and 8 minutes’ drive from town.

Holden’s Bay and Hannah’s Bay, toward Hell’s Gate

The lakeshore by the airport is on State Highway 30, the road out to Tikitere. Stay here for the Hell’s Gate geothermal walk, mud bath and spa, or the night before an early flight. In summer (1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027) Hell’s Gate stays open until 9pm, with last mud bath entry at 7:30pm.

  • Wai Ora Lakeside Spa Resort is on the lakeshore at Holden’s Bay, 3 minutes’ drive from the airport, with a day spa and an outdoor pool overlooking the lake. Its listing names Hell’s Gate as a short drive away.
  • All Seasons Holiday Park by Hannah’s Bay has a heated indoor pool and a hot tub, 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre.
  • Holdens Bay Holiday Park is 2 km from the airport, with an outdoor pool, a hot tub and a playground.

Ngongotahā and the western lakeshore

The western shore of Lake Rotorua is quieter, with lake views, but every bathing venue is a drive.

See all stays in Ngongotahā.

Lake Rotoiti and the Blue Lake

For a lake house, look beyond Lake Rotorua. The Lake Rotoiti evening kayak meets at the boat ramp on Otaramarae Road, Okere Falls, and paddles to Manupirua Springs, which you can reach only by water or air. It runs from 1 November to 30 April. Okere Tree House at Okere Falls is a three-bedroom lakefront house with its own jetty. On Tarawera Road, Blue Lake TOP 10 Holiday Park sits on the edge of the Blue Lake with a hot tub, 16 minutes’ drive from town.

Hotels with their own hot pools

If you want a soak without leaving the hotel, these Booking.com listings name one: Prince’s Gate (three thermally heated pools), Novotel Rotorua Lakeside (geothermal spa and hot pools), Regent of Rotorua (private indoor geothermal mineral pool), Rydges Rotorua (geothermally heated pool and two hot tubs) and Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park (hot pools). Several others list an ordinary hot tub. Read our Polynesian Spa guide and our Wai Ariki guide to choose between them, or see Rotorua hot pools at night for the late sessions.

Booking tips

Book the soak first, then the room. Every Rotorua bathing ticket on this site offers free cancellation, so you can fix your days and then pick the hotel that suits them. Driving down from Auckland takes about 2.5 hours, so a soak on arrival evening works well from a lakefront hotel. Pack proper swimwear: the Polynesian Spa and Wai Ariki do not allow cotton or denim in the pools. If you are pregnant, Wai Ariki cannot take you for bathing, and the Polynesian Spa advises checking with a doctor first.
