Waikite Valley Guide
Waikite Valley Thermal Pools: What to Know
Prices, pools, hours, camping and the closures to plan around.
Waikite Valley Thermal Pools is a rural hot-pool park about a 30-minute drive from Rotorua, with six public pools between 30°C and 41°C, private pools, an eco trail to a boiling spring and a small campground. Adult gate entry is NZ$27.50. It sells its own tickets on its official site, so there is nothing to book through us for Waikite itself. If you would rather book a soak online, the closest match in town is the Polynesian Spa Pavilion Pools, compared further down this page.
What Waikite Valley is like
Waikite sits in farmland out of town, and the setting is the reason to go. The operator describes geothermal water flowing into the pools after cooling over a series of cascades, so the steam you see on the hillside is the same water you end up sitting in. Entry includes a short, flat eco trail to Te Manaroa Spring, which the operator calls “the largest single source of boiling water in New Zealand”. The trail is open in daylight only, so arrive with light left if you want to walk it.
The pools are drained and refilled every night. The operator’s own rule is to keep your head above the water while bathing, and that matters here: like every geothermal pool, the water is untreated and can carry naturally occurring organisms. Do not put your face under, and stop children from ducking or jumping in.
Children aged 8 and under need active supervision in the water from a caregiver aged 16 or over, and nobody under 16 can visit without an adult. The operator advises anyone who is pregnant or has a health condition, such as a heart problem, to get medical advice before bathing. Take off silver jewellery too, since geothermal minerals tarnish it.
The pools and their temperatures
| Pool | Temperature (operator) |
|---|---|
| Settlers Pool | 36–38°C |
| Soak Pool | 39–41°C |
| Garden Pool | 37–39°C |
| Pergola Pool | 35–38°C |
| The Tubs | 30–34°C |
| Private pools | 36°C, individually controlled |
The Tubs at 30–34°C are the gentle end for younger children. The Soak Pool is the hot one, so treat it the way the Rotorua spas advise and come out to cool down every quarter of an hour or so.
Prices, hours and what to bring
Gate prices on the operator’s website, in New Zealand dollars, with online booking fees on top:
| Ticket | Price (NZD) |
|---|---|
| Adult | $27.50 |
| Child (5–15) | $14.20 |
| Infant (under 5) | $4.00 |
| Family (2 adults, 2 children) | $73.50 |
| NZ SuperGold senior | $19.50 |
| Spectator or eco trail only | $4.00 |
| Private pool, 40 minutes | $35 per person |
The pools are open every day from 10:30am to 8pm, with last entry at 7pm. The first pool starts draining at 7:15pm, so a late arrival gets well under an hour in the water. The café runs from 11:30am to 6pm. Rotorua residents get a local discount with ID.
Bring your own towel and swimwear if you can. Towel, men’s shorts and women’s one-piece hire are NZ$18 each, of which NZ$10 is a refundable deposit. You cannot bring alcohol in, and the operator asks that nobody swims after drinking.
Private pools
The private pools are 1.6 metres across, and the operator calls them “most suitable for two people”. Two adults aged 16 or over must be in the pool at all times, sessions last 40 minutes and cannot be booked back to back, and they run from 11am to 6pm only. Booking is essential, and the price includes entry to the public pools afterwards. For couples comparing private soaks in town, see our private hot pools guide.
Closures to plan around
Waikite closes on 25 and 26 December, and for annual maintenance from Tuesday 9 February to Tuesday 23 February 2027, reopening on Wednesday 24 February. If your trip falls in that February fortnight, the Rotorua spas in town stay open; our best time guide lists the season changes at each venue.
Camping at Waikite
A small campground on site has powered and unpowered sites, and campers get access to the pools. Bookings open four months ahead, which matters in summer. Camping prices are on the operator’s site; we have not listed them here because they change by site type and season.
Waikite or Polynesian Spa?
The two suit different days. Waikite is the pick if you have a car, want a rural setting and are happy to leave by 7pm. The Polynesian Spa Pavilion Pools are in town on the lakefront, open until 11pm with last entry at 10pm, and can be booked online from $31 per person with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Pavilion has eight hot pools fed by two springs, the acidic Priest Spring and the alkaline Rachel Spring, plus a foot reflexology walk, and it admits guests aged 12 and over. Our Pavilion Pools review covers what is and is not included.
With younger children, the Polynesian Spa Family Pools have a freshwater pool with a hydroslide alongside two alkaline geothermal pools, from $19 per person. Our family hot pools guide compares both venues for kids. If you want the all-ages lake-view area with towels and lockers included, the Deluxe Lake Spa is from $48 per person.
Free natural springs are a different proposition with their own safety rules, covered on our free hot springs page.
Getting there
Waikite is at 648 Waikite Valley Road, about 30 minutes’ drive from Rotorua, and most visitors drive themselves. The operator also sells a combined ticket with Wai-O-Tapu, which makes sense if you are heading that way for the geothermal park. For how Waikite sits against the other venues, see the Rotorua hot springs map.

Waikite Valley Hot Pools: Questions
Prices, hours, camping, children and how Waikite compares with the spas in town.
Gate prices on the operator's website are NZ$27.50 for an adult, NZ$14.20 for a child aged 5 to 15, NZ$4.00 for an infant under 5 and NZ$73.50 for a family of two adults and two children. NZ SuperGold seniors pay NZ$19.50, and online booking fees are added. Private pools cost NZ$35 per person for 40 minutes, including public pool entry.
The pools are open every day from 10:30am to 8pm, and last entry is at 7pm. The first pool begins to drain at 7:15pm, so arriving late leaves you little time in the water. Private pools run from 11am to 6pm, and the café is open from 11:30am to 6pm. For later soaks in town, see our hot pools at night guide.
The operator describes Waikite Valley Thermal Pools as about a 30-minute drive from Rotorua. The address is 648 Waikite Valley Road. It is a rural venue, so most visitors drive themselves. Our Rotorua hot springs map shows where Waikite sits against the spas in town and the other geothermal sites.
Waikite sells its tickets through its own website, and there is no Waikite listing among the tickets on this site. Book on the operator's own website, where private pools must be booked ahead. If you want an online ticket with free cancellation, the Polynesian Spa Pavilion Pools in town are bookable from $31 per person. Read our Pavilion Pools review.
Yes. There is a small campground on site with powered and unpowered sites, and campers get access to the hot pools. Bookings open four months ahead, so book early for summer and holiday weekends. Camping rates vary by site type and are listed on the operator's website, so check the current price there before you go.
Yes. The operator says geothermal water flows into the pools after being cooled over cascades to bathing temperature, and the pools are drained and refilled each night. Because the water is untreated and can contain naturally occurring organisms, the operator asks every bather to keep their head above the water. Do not dive, jump or put your face under.
It can be. The Tubs run at 30 to 34°C, the coolest water on site, and children under 5 pay the infant rate. The operator requires active supervision by a caregiver aged 16 or over for children aged 8 and under, and no one under 16 may come without an adult. Private pools need two adults aged 16 or over in the pool at all times. Our family hot pools guide compares the options.
Yes. Waikite closes on 25 and 26 December and for annual maintenance from Tuesday 9 February to Tuesday 23 February 2027, reopening on Wednesday 24 February. If you are in Rotorua during that fortnight, the spas in town are an easy swap. Our best time guide lists the seasonal changes at each venue.
Bring your own if you can. Towels, men's shorts and women's one-piece swimsuits can be hired for NZ$18 each, and NZ$10 of that is a deposit refunded when you hand the item back. Remove silver jewellery before you soak, as geothermal minerals can tarnish it. Alcohol cannot be brought in, and swimming after drinking is not allowed.
They suit different trips. Waikite is rural, has a boiling-spring walk and closes at 8pm, and you need a car. Polynesian Spa is on the Rotorua lakefront, opens until 11pm with last entry at 10pm, and its pools can be booked online with free cancellation. Read our Polynesian Spa guide for the in-town option.
