"So relaxing and beautiful overlooking the lake outside! It was nice to have the two hours to use as we wished to do the different experiences. The ice chip room was something new we had never done."

Wai Ariki Guide
Which Wai Ariki Ticket Should You Book?
The three tickets, what each includes, and the rules that matter at the door.
Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa is the lakefront spa on Whakaue Street in Rotorua, owned by Ngāti Whakaue and open to bathers aged 16 and over. Most visitors book one of three tickets: the two-hour Restorative Journey, the shorter 1-hour Restorative Bathing, or the Private Luxury Geothermal Bath for two. Below is what each one includes, what it costs on the booking platforms, and the rules that catch people out at the front desk.
Which Wai Ariki ticket to book
For a first visit, book the Restorative Journey. It is the full Wai Ariki experience: seven stages over two hours, including the mud lounge, the steam room and the fire and ice rooms that the one-hour ticket leaves out. It starts from $100 per person on Viator, where it rates 4.7 from 125 reviews, and the same product is also sold on GetYourGuide from $98. A locker, robe and towel are included. Read our review.
Book the 1-hour Restorative Bathing if you only want the water. You get five pools, among them a cold plunge, a hydrotherapy pool and a herbal pool infused with traditional herbs, plus a locker and a towel. It starts from $56 per person and rates 4.8 from 33 reviews. There is no robe, no mud lounge and no steam room. Read our review.
The five pools on the one-hour ticket run at very different temperatures, so you can pick the ones that suit you:
| Pool | Type | Temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Whangapipiro | Geothermal soak pool (Rachel Spring water) | 38–40°C |
| Puna Wai Wera | Hot geothermal pool | 40–41°C |
| Puna Tio | Ice-cold plunge pool | 12°C |
| Wai Paheko | Herbal pool with kawakawa, mānuka and kānuka | 38–39°C |
| Wai Whakaoho | Hydrotherapy pool | 36°C |
You do not have to use the cold plunge. If you are not used to switching between hot and cold water, start in the 36°C hydrotherapy pool and ask the staff for guidance.
Book the private bath if you are two people who want a room to yourselves. It is priced per group of up to two, from $152, and gives you two single tubs side by side in one room, robes and towels, herbal tea, and a bath caddy each with bath salts, a herbal soak bag, a mud mask and a mud scrub. It has only four reviews so far (4.4), so treat the score as early. The spa says its Ngāwhā tubs best suit guests up to 183cm (6ft) tall, and height and weight limits apply, so check before you book if you are tall. Read our review, or see how it compares with the forest tubs and Polynesian Spa’s private rock pools in our private hot pools guide.
| Ticket | Time | What you get | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restorative Journey | 2 hours | Seven stages: blessing, waterfall showers, fire and ice rooms, lake view pools, mud lounge, steam room, closing blessing | $100 per person (Viator), $98 (GetYourGuide) | 4.7 (125 reviews, Viator) |
| 1-hour Restorative Bathing | 1 hour | Five pools, including cold plunge, hydrotherapy and herbal pools; locker and towel | $56 per person | 4.8 (33 reviews) |
| Private geothermal bath | Not stated on the listing | Two single tubs in a private room, robes, towels, herbal tea, mud mask and scrub | $152 per group up to 2 | 4.4 (4 reviews) |
What happens on the Restorative Journey
The journey is a set route through the building, sold as a guided cultural and wellness walk. It opens with a blessing at Te Hihiri, the lifeforce stone, and it closes with another at Te Ngao. In between you pass under the Wairere waterfall showers and through the fire and ice rooms, which the listing describes as saunas, a wade pool and a frigidarium.
The middle of the journey is Te Taiwhanga Matua, the lake view pools. This is where you spend most of your time: geothermal mineral alkaline pools, a cold-water plunge, a herbal pool and a hydrotherapy pool, under a high roof that keeps off rain and sun, with views across Lake Rotorua to Mokoia Island. From there you move to the geothermal mud lounge, where you apply the mud yourself (natural mud mixed with native plant oils), then to the Kohu Wai Ariki steam room with its heated stone.
Two hours is enough to do each stage without rushing, but it is not a session to squeeze between a late lunch and a dinner booking. Arrive about 15 minutes before your slot to check in. Food and drink are not included; water stations are spread through the complex, and the Te Rourou café is on site.
Rules to know before you go
The age limit is firm. Every bathing and spa experience at Wai Ariki is for guests aged 16 and over, so a family with younger teenagers is better off at Polynesian Spa, whose Deluxe Lake Spa takes all ages (see our family hot pools guide). Younger guests may still use the café and the Te Aronui shop.
Wai Ariki cannot accommodate pregnant guests for bathing or thermal experiences. Pregnancy massage and some facials are offered instead. The listings also flag the experience as unsuitable for people with heart problems, and the Viator listing adds high or low blood pressure, so check with your doctor if either applies.
Wear proper swimwear: cotton T-shirts are not allowed in the pools, and swimwear is sold at Te Aronui if you forget yours. The one-hour listing bans jewellery, and geothermal minerals tarnish silver, so leave rings and chains in the locker. Jumping and diving are not allowed.
The spa has accessible parking, changing rooms and toilets. Pool hoists serve most pools and bathing options for guests up to 100kg, and on the Restorative Journey a water wheelchair can be used in the saunas, the large pool, the mud lounge and the steam room. Tell the reservations team what you need when you book, so they can set it up before you arrive.
Opening hours and evening visits
Wai Ariki opens every day except Christmas Day, with two sets of hours:
| Season | Open until | Last entry, Restorative Journey | Last entry, Restorative Bathing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (November–April) | 11pm | 8:30pm | 9:45pm |
| Winter (May–October) | 10:30pm | 8pm | 9:15pm |
Spa treatments start at 10am. An evening soak under the covered pools is one of the better ways to end a Rotorua day, and our hot pools at night guide lines up Wai Ariki’s late hours against the other spas in town.
Where it is and who runs it
The spa is at 1047 Whakaue Street, on the edge of Lake Rotorua and within walking distance of the city centre, with free parking on site. It is owned by Ngāti Whakaue, and its experiences are guided by Ngāti Whakaue traditions, which is why the journey opens and closes with a blessing. Wai Ariki opened in 2023, was named Best New Spa at the 2023 Spa & Wellness Awards, and was a finalist in two categories at the 2025 World Spa Awards.
Platform prices and gate prices
The figures higher up this page are what the booking platforms show in US dollars. Wai Ariki’s own website sells in New Zealand dollars, so the two sets of numbers are not directly comparable. These are the spa’s own prices, checked on its website on 30 October 2026:
| Experience at Wai Ariki | Time | Gate price |
|---|---|---|
| Restorative Bathing (Wai Whakatā), towel included | 60 minutes | NZ$99 per person |
| Restorative Journey (Wai Whakaora) | 2 hours | NZ$175 per person |
| Restorative Journey + Sanctuary Bathing | 3 hours | NZ$270 per person |
| Puna Tūmataiti private geothermal pool | 45 minutes | NZ$130 for two, up to four guests |
| Ngāwhā Sensory Ritual, private bathtub | 75 minutes | NZ$145 for one, NZ$285 for two |
| Private Pool + Journey package for two | About 3 hours | NZ$470 per couple |
The Puna Tūmataiti pool is a different product from the Ngāwhā bathtubs: it is one shared pool kept at 36 to 39°C, with a minimum of two guests per booking, and the spa sometimes runs a “Bathe for Pink” offer on it from NZ$110. The Private Pool + Journey package gives you 45 minutes in a private pool, the two-hour Restorative Journey and a grazing platter. The Journey + Sanctuary ticket adds time in the quieter Sanctuary pools, including its stargaze pool, to the full journey.
Cancellation terms differ between the two routes. The GetYourGuide tickets let you cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours ahead, and the Viator Restorative Journey also offers free cancellation. Booked direct, a Restorative Journey, Sanctuary or spa booking cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice is charged in full, and the spa’s terms allow a processing fee of up to 3 percent on refunds. For every Rotorua spa’s price side by side, see our hot pools prices guide.
Wai Ariki or Polynesian Spa?
Both spas are on the Rotorua lakefront and both stay open into the evening. Wai Ariki suits adults who want a guided circuit with mud, steam and herbal pools under one roof. Polynesian Spa suits families, tighter budgets and anyone who wants open-air rock pools on the lake edge, with Pavilion Pools from $31 and the Deluxe Lake Spa from $48. We cover the decision in full on Polynesian Spa vs Wai Ariki.
When you have picked your ticket, check Restorative Journey dates and times.

What Wai Ariki Guests Say
Ratings and review counts are each platform's live figures (Viator or GetYourGuide) as of October 2026 and may shift slightly day to day.
"Listen to the instructions - go one way and not backwards through the experience. They also advise no jewellery which is a good point. It was amazing and I will definately go back when I am in Rotorua."
"This was the best thing I’ve done for my wellbeing, my mind, my body and I would fly all the way from Australia just to do this experience again…"
"Our bodies were so tight and had lots of knots from traveling; this place came as just perfect. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but it provides upscale spa experience with less crowd and more space. Each sauna and ice room were amazing."
"2 hours is the perfect amount of time. They limit the number of visitors so it feels calm and lots of room. Highly recommend. The little Cafe has refreshing items for afterwards. Great to schedule after long flights to New Zealand."
"Peaceful, rejuvenating. Fun. Immersive. The spa is an experience from the beginning to the end. Clean and restorative"
"Amazing and very relaxing. Bring a clean pair of clothes for after your time in the spa and an extra bag for your wet swim suit. Wish I had time to come back and do it again."
"This experience was so relaxing and rejuvenating at the same time. Would highly recommend this. Wish I could do it every day."

Every bathing and spa experience at Wai Ariki is for guests aged 16 and over, with no exceptions for younger teenagers. Under-16s may still visit the Te Rourou café and the Te Aronui shop. If you are travelling with children, Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa takes all ages. Our family hot pools guide covers the options.
No. Wai Ariki is unable to accommodate pregnant guests for bathing or thermal experiences, which covers the pools, the Restorative Journey and the private baths. The spa offers pregnancy massage and some facials instead. Polynesian Spa advises pregnant guests to consult a medical practitioner before bathing, so speak to your doctor if you plan to soak anywhere in Rotorua.
It depends on the ticket. The Restorative Journey includes a locker, robe and towel. The 1-hour Restorative Bathing includes a locker and towel but no robe. The private geothermal bath includes robes and towels for two, plus herbal tea and a bath caddy each. Bring your own swimwear; cotton T-shirts are not allowed in the pools, and swimwear is sold on site.
Wai Ariki opens every day except Christmas Day. From November to April it is open until 11pm, with last entry at 8:30pm for the Restorative Journey and 9:45pm for Restorative Bathing. From May to October it closes at 10:30pm, with last entries at 8pm and 9:15pm. Spa treatments start at 10am. Our night soaks guide compares the late hours.
Yes. The private geothermal bath ticket gives two people a room with two single tubs, robes, towels, herbal tea, bath salts, a herbal soak bag, a mud mask and a mud scrub. It is priced from $152 per group of up to two and has four reviews so far, rated 4.4. Yes, for most experiences. The spa has accessible parking, changing rooms and toilets, and pool hoists in most pools for guests up to 100kg. On the Restorative Journey a water wheelchair can be used in the saunas, the large pool, the mud lounge and the steam room. Tell the reservations team what you need when you book so they can prepare.
It is one hour in the bathing area with five pools: two geothermal soaks, a cold plunge, a hydrotherapy pool and a herbal pool infused with traditional herbs. It opens with a karakia (blessing) and includes a locker and towel. It starts from $56 per person and rates 4.8 from 33 reviews. Arrive about 15 minutes early to check in. Read our review.
Wai Ariki is owned by Ngāti Whakaue, the local iwi (tribe), and its experiences are guided by Ngāti Whakaue traditions. That is why the Restorative Journey opens and closes with a blessing. The spa opened on the Rotorua lakefront in 2023 and was named Best New Spa at the 2023 Spa & Wellness Awards.
It suits a different visitor. Wai Ariki is for adults 16 and over who want a guided circuit with mud, steam and herbal pools under a high roof. Polynesian Spa takes children, costs less (Pavilion Pools from $31) and has open-air rock pools on the lake edge. Our Polynesian Spa vs Wai Ariki page sets out which to book for your group.
Wai Ariki is at 1047 Whakaue Street on the shore of Lake Rotorua, within walking distance of the city centre. Parking on site is free if you drive. Transfers are not included in any of the tickets, so plan to walk, drive or take a taxi. The pools look out across the lake to Mokoia Island.
