Rotorua: Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa 1hr Restorative Bathing

About This Experience
Restorative Bathing is the one-hour, pools-only way into Wai Ariki, the iwi-owned spa on the Rotorua lakefront, from $56 per person on GetYourGuide. You get five pools, from a 12°C cold plunge to a 41°C geothermal soak, framed by a blessing at the start and end, with a locker and towel included. It is for guests aged 16 and over.
The session opens at Te Hihiri, an obsidian stone brought from Mt Tarawera, where a karakia (blessing) is offered. From there you move freely between the pools: Whangapipiro, a silica-rich alkaline geothermal soak at 38 to 40°C; Puna Wai Wera, the hottest at 40 to 41°C, with views of Mokoia Island; Puna Tio, the 12°C plunge; Wai Paheko, a herbal pool with kawakawa, mānuka and kānuka; and Wai Whakaoho, a 36°C hydrotherapy pool with submerged loungers, jets and waterfall showers. A closing blessing at Te Ngao ends the hour.
This ticket suits adults who want Wai Ariki's design, lake views and hot-and-cold pools without paying for the full two-hour Restorative Journey. It does not include the saunas, ice room, mud lounge or steam room, and robes are extra; one reviewer had assumed a massage was part of it, and it is not. Twenty-seven GetYourGuide reviewers rate it 4.7, praising the blessing, the herbal pool and the hot and cold contrast.
An hour goes quickly, so arrive 15 minutes early to check in; parking on site is free. The pools sit under a high roof, which makes this a sound choice on a wet Rotorua evening, and last entry runs to 9:15pm in winter and 9:45pm from November to April. Pregnant guests cannot use the pools, and no one under 16 is admitted.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.8/5 by 33 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
recently visited Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa as a solo female traveller and had such a beautiful, rejuvenating experience. From the moment I arrived, the team made me feel welcome and safe. The visit began with a heartfelt traditional Māori blessing — it was genuinely moving and set such a peaceful tone for the whole session. (If the guide Rina reada this — thank you so much, your warmth and explanations made the experience even more special.) I loved the variety of thermal pools. The temperatures ranged nicely, with the hottest geothermal pool reaching a perfect 41–44°C for deep relaxation, while others sat around 36–40°C. I especially enjoyed alternating between the warm mineral pools and the icy cold plunge pool — that contrast is incredibly invigorating! The herbal pool infused with local herbs was my favourite; it felt so soothing and aromatic. The gift store is well priced and ouls blended by your guide. Next time 3 hours. A Maori Palace and permission to take photos was granted.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Restorative Bathing and the Restorative Journey?
Restorative Bathing is one hour in the five pools: geothermal soak, hot geothermal pool, cold plunge, herbal pool and hydrotherapy pool, with locker and towel. The two-hour Restorative Journey adds the fire and ice room with saunas, the mud lounge and the steam room, and includes a robe. Bathing is the cheaper, shorter option.
How hot and cold are the pools?
Whangapipiro, the geothermal soak pool, is 38 to 40°C; Puna Wai Wera, the hottest, is 40 to 41°C; Wai Paheko, the herbal pool, is 38 to 39°C; the Wai Whakaoho hydrotherapy pool is 36°C; and Puna Tio, the cold plunge, is 12°C. Most guests alternate between the hot pools and the plunge.
What is the minimum age?
Sixteen. Wai Ariki admits guests aged 16 and over to all its bathing and spa experiences, and it cannot accommodate pregnant guests in the pools. Younger visitors can use the café and shop. For a family soak, Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa and Family Pools take all ages.
Is a massage or robe included?
No. The ticket covers the one-hour pool session, the blessings, a locker, a towel and water fountains. Robes, food and drinks, and spa treatments are not included. Massages and other treatments are booked separately with Wai Ariki, and spa treatments start from 10am.
What time is last entry?
Last entry for Restorative Bathing is 9:15pm in winter (May to October) and 9:45pm in summer (November to April). The spa closes at 10:30pm in winter and 11pm in summer, and is open every day except Christmas Day. Arrive 15 minutes before your booked time to check in.
Can I cancel?
Yes. Booked through GetYourGuide, this ticket can be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. It is from $56 per person. Parking at Wai Ariki is free, but transport is not included, so plan to drive or walk to Whakaue Street on the lakefront.
