About This Experience

This is the mud bath and sulphur spa ticket at Hell's Gate, without the geothermal walk, and it is from $52 per person on Viator. You check in at the bathing complex, change, and step into a warm outdoor pool of fine grey geothermal mud, where you can spend up to 20 minutes smearing it over your skin. After a shower you move into the hot sulphur spa pools to soak, and there is a cool plunge pool for the end. Allow about an hour in all.

Hell's Gate sits at Tikitere, just outside Rotorua on State Highway 30, and the bathing pools look out over the steaming reserve. The operator says local Māori have used the mud and sulphur water here for more than 800 years, and describes the mud as gently exfoliating the skin. Expect a strong sulphur smell that stays in your swimsuit until it is washed.

It suits couples, friends and families who want the mud experience itself and do not need a guided walk. Children can join from 2.5 years old in the mud and 6 months in the sulphur spa, so a young family can bathe together. If you also want to see the geothermal reserve and Kākahi Falls on foot, book the combined walk, mud bath and spa ticket instead; walk-only and mud-and-spa tickets are sold separately.

Bring an old swimsuit, because the sulphur smell lingers, and leave silver jewellery at your hotel. Towels and swimwear can be hired at reception. In summer, from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, Hell's Gate stays open until 9pm with last mud bath entry at 7:30pm, which leaves room for an early evening soak. In 551 Viator reviews the ticket averages 4.4, with guests praising the friendly staff and the novelty of a full-body mud bath; the same ticket is also sold on GetYourGuide.

You go in and check in for the mud bath, no more than 20minutes, cake urself in mud and relax.then you go into Sulphur pool after showering to get the mud off. For myself I got really burning eyes in the Sulphur pool but I have really sensitive eyes. My husband didn't get any issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can you stay in the Hell's Gate mud bath?

Twenty minutes per person per day. That limit is set by Hell's Gate for health and safety reasons and applies to every bather, adult or child. After the mud you shower off and can soak in the sulphur spa pools and the cool plunge pool, so the whole visit usually takes about an hour.

Can children do the mud bath at Hell's Gate?

Yes. The minimum age is 2.5 years for the mud bath and 6 months for the sulphur spa. Hell's Gate counts children as ages 5 to 15 and asks that anyone under 15 is supervised by an adult at all times. Under-4s are free with a paying adult on this ticket.

Does this ticket include the geothermal walk?

No. This ticket covers the mud bath, the sulphur spa pools and the cool plunge only. The guided or self-guided geothermal walk, which takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, is a separate ticket, and Hell's Gate also sells a combined walk, mud bath and spa experience if you want both in one visit.

What should I bring to the mud bath?

An old swimsuit and a towel. Towels and swimwear can be hired at reception if you forget. The sulphur smell stays in fabric until it has been washed properly, so pack a plastic bag for wet things. Take off your jewellery before you go in, because the minerals tarnish most metals, especially silver.

What are the opening hours at Hell's Gate?

Hell's Gate is open 10am to 9pm every day, with last entry for the mud bath and spas at 7:30pm. It closes only on Christmas Day.

How do I get to Hell's Gate from Rotorua?

Drive east from Rotorua on State Highway 30. About five minutes past the airport, turn right towards Whakatāne, and Hell's Gate is 3 km down that road at Tikitere. If you are not driving, Hell's Gate runs a free shuttle from central Rotorua, but it must be booked in advance.

Is the mud bath safe if I am pregnant or have a heart condition?

Hell's Gate recommends that women do not bathe while pregnant and asks anyone who still wants to bathe to check with a health professional first. The ticket is not recommended for travelers with heart problems or other serious medical conditions. If you are unsure, ask your doctor before you book.
