From Auckland: Wai-O-Tapu & Polynesian Spa Rotorua Day Tour

4.7 (37 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is a 12-hour day trip from Auckland that pairs Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland with an afternoon soak at Polynesian Spa, from $213 per person. Hotel pickup in central Auckland, the guide, Wai-O-Tapu admission and the spa ticket are included; food is not.

After about three hours in the van, you get around an hour and a half to walk Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland on your own, past the green and orange Champagne Pool, bubbling mud pools and steaming craters. A half-hour sightseeing loop of the Rotorua district follows, and the listing mentions lakes such as the Blue and Green Lakes. Then comes about two hours at Polynesian Spa on the shore of Lake Rotorua, before the drive of roughly three and a half hours back to your hotel.

Polynesian Spa's pools are fed by two springs, one alkaline and one acidic, and geothermal bathing on the site dates to 1878, though the spa itself opened in 1972. One reviewer describes the Deluxe Lake Spa package, with towels, lockers, toiletries and hairdryers, plus pools of different temperatures and a cold plunge pool, but the listing only says "entrance ticket", so check what yours covers if a particular pool area matters to you. The adult Pavilion Pools are 12+.

It suits travelers who want to see Rotorua's geothermal landscape and actually bathe in its mineral water, all in one day from Auckland and without driving. It is a long day, with more time on the road than in the pools. The tour averages 4.7 from 37 GetYourGuide reviews, with guides such as Matt, Jason and David praised for timing the stops well, and free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.7/5 by 37 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

We had an amazing day! The van was comfortable, clean, tidy, and we were offered granola bars, water, and umbrellas. We had just the right number of stops on the way to Rotorua. Matt was friendly and gave us an informative and funny tour, and ensured we never waited longer than necessary at any one point, seamlessly getting us to the right place at the right time, despite occasional road works and traffic. Wai-o-Tapu was otherworldly and stunningly beautiful, and Matt got us ahead of the crowds. We went for the spa afternoon activity and were impressed with the ‘deluxe’ package that was included with this day tour. This package included towels, lockers, and spotlessly clean changing room facilities with toiletries and hairdryers. The cafe at the spa is really lovely. The time of day we went was peaceful and we were picked up just as it was getting busier. Will be recommending this tour to anyone I know visiting Auckland! Thank you, special thanks to Matt who went above and beyond.

When I book a tour with a guide, I never know quite what to expect, especially with teenage kids, but what a great day we had. Our guide Mr Burhan was super kind and lovely. The drive was long but the scenery was gorgeous and we also were able to catch up on our sleep a little too. Wai O Tapu is beautiful, with a well planned walk weaving between the lakes and craters. The last lake before the exit was surreal. The Polynesian spa was extremely relaxing. There were pools of different temperatures and a cold plunge pool as well. We all felt super refreshed. It did not feel touristy at all, even though we were all tourists! Our guide took time out to stop at different sights along the way for photos opportunities which was appreciated. Complimentary water and energy bars were available. I appreciate the effort that went in to today. Thank you so much for a fantastic day!

I actually wanted to go to Waioa Cave, but it was already fully booked, so I reluctantly went on this tour! The geothermal energy of Waiotapu was even better than I expected and it was a valuable experience. As for the spa, the open-air bath with a great view was amazing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you get at Wai-O-Tapu and Polynesian Spa?

About 1.5 hours at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, which you explore at your own pace, and about two hours at Polynesian Spa. In between is a half-hour sightseeing loop of the Rotorua district. The drive is around 3 hours to Rotorua and 3.5 hours back, which is why the whole day runs to about 12 hours.

Which Polynesian Spa pools does the ticket cover?

The listing says "entrance ticket to Polynesian Spa" without naming the pool area. One reviewer reports that it was the Deluxe Lake Spa, which comes with towels, lockers, toiletries and hairdryers and has mineral pools, a cold plunge pool and lake views. If a specific area matters to you, confirm with the operator when you book.

Is lunch included?

No. Food and drinks are not included, so bring money for lunch in Rotorua. Reviewers say water and granola or energy bars were offered in the van, and the Polynesian Spa has a café. A reusable water bottle is useful for the walk at Wai-O-Tapu and for staying hydrated in the hot pools.

Can children join?

Yes, with an adult. Reviewers have done this trip with teenagers. At Polynesian Spa the adult Pavilion Pools are 12+, while the Deluxe Lake Spa is open to all ages. Because the listing does not say which area the ticket covers, check with the operator before booking with children under 12.

How much walking is involved?

The main walk is at Wai-O-Tapu, where you spend about 1.5 hours on the tracks between the craters, pools and the Champagne Pool. The listing asks for a medium level of fitness, and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users. The rest of the day is in the van or at the spa.

Where is pickup in Auckland?

The tour picks up from 18 central Auckland hotels, including the Hilton, SkyCity Auckland, Pullman, Park Hyatt, Sofitel Viaduct Harbour and Grand Millennium, and drops you back at the same list. The pickup time appears when you check availability. If your hotel is not on the list, ask the operator about meeting at the nearest one that is.

Can I cancel?

Yes. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund. GetYourGuide also lets you reserve now and pay later. For a geothermal day trip with a different focus, the same operator runs a version that swaps Wai-O-Tapu for Whakarewarewa Māori village and a haka performance.
