About This Experience

This is a 12-hour small-group day trip from Auckland that combines Whakarewarewa, a living Māori village, with an afternoon soak at Polynesian Spa, from $222 per person. Groups are capped at 11, and pickup and drop-off at 20 central Auckland hotels, the village entry, the cultural performance and the spa entry are all included. Food is not.

After about three hours of driving through the Waikato, you spend around three hours at Whakarewarewa. Local guides walk you through the village and its steaming vents, bubbling mud and geysers, and explain how the steam and hot water are used for cooking. The visit ends with a performance of traditional song and dance, including the haka. Reviewers mention a hāngī-style lunch at the village café, which you pay for yourself.

In the afternoon you have about two hours at Polynesian Spa on the shore of Lake Rotorua, where pools are fed by an alkaline spring and an acidic spring. Geothermal bathing on this site dates back to 1878, though the spa itself opened in 1972. One reviewer describes pools at 35, 38 and 41°C. On the way out of town there is a photo stop at Lake Rotorua and a drive past the Government Gardens before the return to Auckland.

It suits travelers who want Māori culture and a geothermal soak in a single day from Auckland, and who do not mind a long day on the road. The listing does not say which Polynesian Spa pool area is included, and the adult Pavilion Pools are 12+, so families with younger children should ask first. The tour averages 4.8 from 62 GetYourGuide reviews, and free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 62 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

We had a terrific trip out to Rotorua with our guide Matt, who was full of local knowledge and had a lot of solid tips for our further travels in NZ. He made sure we had rest stops and even managed to get around some of the terrible holiday traffic we experienced heading back into Auckland. The Maori village was worth the visit, we were shown around by Michael who explained everything clearly and concisely about village life and the surrounds. A musical and dance performance and delicious hangi lunch in the local café capped off the memorable visit. The Polynesian Spa was incredibly relaxing and we had a fabulous time soaking in the pools for a solid couple of hours. It must be said that it was a long day with the travel times from and to Auckland, but definitely worth it.

The visit to the living Maori village with its hot springs was very nice. The guide not only gave us information about the village and the hot springs, he also gave us detailed information about Maori culture in the past and present. The explanations about the geothermal springs and their use, e.g. for cooking, were very good. The dance performance at the end was worth seeing and left an impression on us. In the associated shop and café we were able to buy souvenirs and eat a dish from the oven of the hot springs. In the afternoon we visited a Polynesia SPA and relaxed in the warm or hot water at 35, 38 or 41 degrees Celsius. The pick-up from Auckland and the return transport were well organized. There was time for a small breakfast on the way there, and on the way back there were drinks and snacks in the vehicle.

This was such a fun day trip! Rotorua was beautiful and so fun to explore and Brendan was an incredible guide. He was very informative and fun to hang out with. You should definitely make sure you do the day spa because it was very relaxing and the perfect end to the day

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Whakarewarewa?

Whakarewarewa is a living Māori village in Rotorua, where local families still live among the geothermal features. On this tour you spend about three hours there with a local guide, seeing geysers, boiling pools and silica formations, hearing how the steam and hot water are used in daily life, and watching a performance of traditional song and dance with the haka.

How long do you get at Polynesian Spa?

About two hours, according to the itinerary. Polynesian Spa sits on the shore of Lake Rotorua, with pools fed by an alkaline spring and an acidic spring. Polynesian Spa recommends no more than fifteen minutes at a time in the hotter pools, alternating with cooler ones, so two hours gives you room to move between them at an easy pace.

Is lunch included?

No. Food and drinks are not included, so bring money for lunch. Reviewers bought a hāngī-style meal at the café in Whakarewarewa village, cooked using the geothermal ground, and mention snacks and drinks in the vehicle on the way home. Bring a reusable water bottle too.

Can children come on this tour?

Children can join with an adult, as unaccompanied minors are not allowed. At Polynesian Spa the adult Pavilion Pools are for ages 12 and over, while the Deluxe Lake Spa and Family Pools are open to children. The listing does not say which pool area the ticket covers, so ask the operator before booking with younger children.

Where is pickup in Auckland?

The tour picks up from 20 central Auckland hotels, including the Hilton, SkyCity Hotel, Grand Millennium, Pullman, Park Hyatt, JW Marriott and Sofitel Viaduct Harbour, and drops you back at the same list. The pickup time appears when you check availability for your date. If your hotel is not on the list, ask the operator about meeting at the nearest one that is.

What should I bring for the spa?

Swimwear, flip-flops and a reusable water bottle. Adult swimwear can be hired or bought at the spa's shop if you forget. Polynesian Spa asks for purpose-made swimwear only, so no cotton, denim or leggings, and advises taking off jewellery because the mineral water can tarnish silver and some gold.

Can I cancel?

Yes. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund. GetYourGuide also lets you reserve now and pay later, which keeps your plans flexible if you are not yet sure of your Auckland dates.
