Auckland to Rotorua

Rotorua's Hot Springs from Auckland

Day tour, self-drive or overnight, and which soak each tour includes.

Yes, you can soak in Rotorua’s hot springs on a day trip from Auckland. Rotorua is about 2.5 hours’ drive away, roughly 230 km, and several day tours include spa entry along with a geothermal park or a Māori village. Our pick is the Rotorua Māori Village & Polynesian Spa with Haka tour by Expedigo NZ: three hours at Whakarewarewa, two hours at Polynesian Spa, hotel pickup and drop-off, from $222 per person and rated 4.8 from 62 reviews.

Which soak each day tour includes

The deciding question for most people is which pool they end up in, because the tours split clearly between Polynesian Spa, Secret Spot, Wai Ariki and Hell’s Gate.

Hell’s Gate Mud Spa & Blue SpringsHell’s Gate mud bath and sulphur spaHell’s Gate park$2244.5 (13)

The Wai-O-Tapu & Polynesian Spa day, also run by Expedigo NZ, swaps the village for an hour and a half on the self-guided paths at Wai-O-Tapu, then two hours at the spa. It suits you if Wai-O-Tapu’s Champagne Pool and bubbling mud pools matter more to you than the village visit. Read our review.

Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s Waiotapu, Hot Tubs & Lunch tour ends in a private cedar tub at Secret Spot in the forest, and lunch is included. Secret Spot fills its tubs with heated fresh spring water, so think of it as a private hot tub in the trees, not a mineral pool. Children need to be 5 or older for the tubs. The same tour is sold on GetYourGuide too. Read our review, or see what the venue itself is like on our Secret Spot page.

The most-reviewed Auckland day tour on this site, Cheeky Kiwi’s Wai-O-Tapu, Lunch & 5 Experience Choices with 452 reviews, lets you pick your afternoon from five options. Two of them are soaks, Polynesian Spa and Secret Spot, and the others are the Redwoods Treewalk, Te Puia and a zipline. If your group cannot agree, this is the one to book, since people on the same bus can do different things. Read our review.

For the Wai Ariki spa on the lakefront, Expedigo NZ runs the Wai-O-Tapu & Wai Ariki Hot Springs Day Tour with the two-hour Restorative Journey, though it has only two reviews so far. Wai Ariki only admits guests aged 16 and over, and pregnant guests cannot use its bathing or thermal areas. Our Wai Ariki guide explains the experience.

Mud bath fans can take ENZOY Tours’ Hell’s Gate Mud Spa & Blue Springs Day Tour, which includes park entry and the mud bath and sulphur spa. Lunch is extra and the tour drops off at Auckland Airport.

How long the day is

Plan on 12 hours. Cheeky Kiwi lists its tours at 12 hours, and the Expedigo NZ itineraries show about three hours each way by road, with four to five and a half hours in Rotorua. That leaves two hours in the pools on the Polynesian Spa tours, enough for a proper soak with breaks to cool off. Food is not included on the Expedigo NZ tours, so budget for lunch. All four tours we review can be cancelled free of charge, and on the two GetYourGuide tours the cutoff is 24 hours before.

Driving yourself instead

Driving gives you more time in the water. The road trip from Auckland takes about 2.5 hours without stops, and both Polynesian Spa and Wai Ariki are on the Rotorua lakefront in town. The Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa is from $48 per person with towels and lockers included, and our Polynesian Spa guide covers the other pool areas. Our hot springs map shows how the venues sit against each other once you are in town.

The other two bathing venues are a short drive out. Hell’s Gate is east of the city on State Highway 30, about five minutes past the airport and then 3 km down the Whakatāne road, and it runs a free shuttle from central Rotorua if you book it. Secret Spot is at the mountain bike car park on Waipa State Mill Road, beside the Whakarewarewa Forest. With a car you can fit a lakefront spa and one of these into the same day.

There is also a direct Air New Zealand service from Auckland to Rotorua, which suits travellers without a car who want more than a day.

Why an overnight stay changes things

A day tour has to leave Rotorua in time for the three-hour drive back, so you miss the late-evening soak. Stay one night and you can bathe after dark: Polynesian Spa takes last entry at 10pm and Wai Ariki stays open until 11pm in summer and 10:30pm in winter. Our guides to hot pools at night and where to stay near the hot springs cover that version of the trip.

Before you book

Swimwear can be hired or bought at Polynesian Spa’s shop, but bringing your own saves a step. Leave silver jewellery behind, as the mineral water can tarnish it. The tours that list health notes advise checking with a doctor if you are pregnant or have a heart condition, and none of the tours above is suitable for wheelchair users.

When you have chosen your soak, check availability.

What Māori Village & Polynesian Spa Guests Say

"We had a terrific trip out to Rotorua with our guide Matt, who was full of local knowledge and had a lot of solid tips for our further travels in NZ. He made sure we had rest stops and even managed to get around some of the terrible holiday traffic we experienced heading back into Auckland. The Maori village was worth the visit, we were shown around by Michael who explained everything clearly and concisely about village life and the surrounds. A musical and dance performance and delicious hangi lunch in the local café capped off the memorable visit. The Polynesian Spa was incredibly relaxing and we had a fabulous time soaking in the pools for a solid couple of hours. It must be said that it was a long day with the travel times from and to Auckland, but definitely worth it."

"The visit to the living Maori village with its hot springs was very nice. The guide not only gave us information about the village and the hot springs, he also gave us detailed information about Maori culture in the past and present. The explanations about the geothermal springs and their use, e.g. for cooking, were very good. The dance performance at the end was worth seeing and left an impression on us. In the associated shop and café we were able to buy souvenirs and eat a dish from the oven of the hot springs. In the afternoon we visited a Polynesia SPA and relaxed in the warm or hot water at 35, 38 or 41 degrees Celsius. The pick-up from Auckland and the return transport were well organized. There was time for a small breakfast on the way there, and on the way back there were drinks and snacks in the vehicle."
