What It Costs

How Much Do Rotorua's Hot Pools Cost?

Ticket prices, gate prices, extras and the combos that save money.

A soak in Rotorua costs from $19 per person for the Polynesian Spa Family Pools up to $152 for a private geothermal bath for two at Wai Ariki, on the booking sites. Standard adult soaks run from $26 to $65. The figures below come in two currencies: ticket prices on GetYourGuide and Viator are shown in US dollars, while the gate prices on the venues’ own websites are in New Zealand dollars. We keep the two apart, so compare like with like.

The price ladder, cheapest first

These are the starting prices on the booking sites, per person unless stated.

Several tickets are sold on both sites at slightly different prices. The Restorative Journey is $98 on GetYourGuide and $100 on Viator, Secret Spot is $25 and $26, and the Deluxe Lake Spa is $48 and $49. Each pair is the same experience, so book whichever is lower for your date.

Budget soaks under $35

The cheapest way into geothermal water is the Polynesian Spa Family Pools at $19, and that ticket has no time limit on the day. For adults without children, the Pavilion Pools at $31 give you eight hot pools at 38 to 41°C, but towels, lockers and swimwear are extra, so add the hire costs if you arrive without them. A Secret Spot tub at $26 per person is cheaper than the Pavilion Pools, though you get 45 minutes in heated fresh spring water, not a geothermal pool. More on Secret Spot.

Waikite Valley Thermal Pools, about 30 minutes’ drive out of town, has no booking-site ticket. Its gate price is NZ$27.50 for an adult. See the Waikite Valley guide.

Mid-range: $45 to $65

The Deluxe Lake Spa at $48 is where the price buys comfort: towels, lockers, soap, shampoo and hairdryers are in the ticket, children are welcome and there is no clock on the day. It rates 4.6 from 409 reviews. Read our review.

At Hell’s Gate the combo saves money. On GetYourGuide the walk, mud bath and spa ticket is $65, while the mud bath and spa ($51) and the walk alone ($25) bought separately come to $76. The gate prices follow the same pattern: NZ$115 for the full experience against NZ$90 plus NZ$45 bought apart. The combo also has 1,277 reviews and a 4.7 rating, the most-reviewed bathing ticket on this site. Our Hell’s Gate guide has the details.

Premium: Wai Ariki and private baths

Wai Ariki’s one-hour session costs $56 and the two-hour Restorative Journey $100, so the second hour costs less than the first and adds the fire and ice room, mud lounge and steam room, plus a robe. Both admit guests aged 16 and over only. The private bath for two is priced per group of up to two people at $152, about $76 each for a couple. Compare it with every private hot pool in Rotorua before you choose.

Extras that change the total

Check what the ticket leaves out. Polynesian Spa’s Pavilion Pools and Family Pools charge for towels and swimwear hire, while the Deluxe Lake Spa includes them. Hell’s Gate hires swimsuits and towels at NZ$5 per item, and both will smell of sulphur afterwards, so old swimwear is the better choice. Secret Spot charges for towel, swimwear and robe hire, and drinks are bought at the tub-side bar. Wai Ariki’s one-hour ticket includes a locker and towel but not a robe. At Waikite a towel costs NZ$18, of which NZ$10 is a refundable deposit.

Ways to pay less

Families with young children should start at the Family Pools, where under-fives go free at the gate. Polynesian Spa sells a concession pass of ten visits for the price of eight, NZ$439.60 and valid for six months, which suits a longer stay. Secret Spot offers a Local’s Deal and SuperGold discounts by phone, and Waikite gives Rotorua residents a discount with ID and charges NZ SuperGold holders NZ$19.50. If you only want a free soak, the natural options are on our free hot springs page, with the safety rules that come with them.
