After Dark

Which Rotorua Hot Pools Are Open at Night?

Closing times, last entries and the best late soak for each kind of group.

Polynesian Spa and Wai Ariki are the Rotorua hot pools that stay open latest. Polynesian Spa is open until 11pm every day, with last entry at 10pm, and Wai Ariki closes at 10:30pm from May to October and 11pm from November to April. Secret Spot’s forest tubs run to 10pm, Hell’s Gate stays open until 9pm through its summer season, and Waikite Valley shuts at 8pm. If you have one free evening, our pick is the Pavilion Pools at Polynesian Spa, which lets you start the latest.

The late soak: Pavilion Pools at Polynesian Spa

For a soak that starts after dinner, the Pavilion Pools are the simplest choice. Last entry is 10pm, so you can eat in town first and still have the best part of an hour in the water. The ticket opens eight hot pools for ages 12 and up: three acidic Priest Spring pools at 39–41°C, three cascading alkaline Rachel Spring pools at 38–40°C, a deep stand-up pool and a pool overlooking Lake Rotorua at 40°C, plus a foot reflexology walk. It starts from $31 per person and rates 4.4 from 447 reviews. Towels and lockers are not included, so bring a towel or hire one at the spa. Read our review.

With children, book the Deluxe Lake Spa instead. It takes all ages, has the same 10pm last entry, and adds things that help on a cold night: geothermally heated recliners, an indoor relaxation lounge and changing rooms with towels and hairdryers. It starts from $48 and rates 4.6 from 409 reviews. Our Deluxe Lake Spa vs Pavilion Pools page covers the split in full.

Wai Ariki after dark

Wai Ariki’s 1-hour Restorative Bathing is the evening pick for adults when the weather turns. Its five pools sit under a high roof facing the lake, so rain does not end the night. Last entry is 9:15pm until the end of October and 9:45pm from November. The ticket is for ages 16 and up, starts from $56 and rates 4.8 from 33 reviews. If you want the two-hour Restorative Journey in the evening, the last entry is earlier: 8pm in winter and 8:30pm in summer.

A private tub in the forest

The Secret Spot forest hot tub gives you a private cedar tub for 45 minutes, filled with heated fresh spring water, not geothermal water. It is open until 10pm every day, so pick a slot that finishes by closing. The ticket includes access to the cold plunge tubs, starts from $26 and rates 4.8 from 634 reviews. Children aged 5 and over can soak with a paying adult. Secret Spot sits at the mountain bike car park on Waipa State Mill Road, beside the Whakarewarewa Forest, so plan transport there and back. For a date-night version, see our romantic hot springs guide, and for the tubs themselves, our Secret Spot guide.

Hell’s Gate on summer evenings

Hell’s Gate opens from 10am to 9pm every day except Christmas Day, and the last entry for the mud bath and spas is 7:30pm. That makes the mud bath an early-evening option. You get 20 minutes in the mud, followed by the sulphur spa. Hell’s Gate is at Tikitere, just outside the city on State Highway 30, and its free shuttle from central Rotorua must be booked ahead. Our Hell’s Gate guide has the tickets.

Hot springs by kayak, from November

The Lake Rotoiti evening kayak tour takes you to a lakeside hot spring in the evening. Over about six hours you paddle Lake Rotoiti with a guide, soak in the hot pools, visit the glowworms and finish with a Kiwi barbecue dinner. Hot pool entry and the equipment are included. It runs from 1 November to 30 April, takes ages 5 and up, needs a moderate level of fitness, and starts from $131 per person (4.9 from 65 reviews). Read our review.

Natural pools after dark

Free natural pools such as Kerosene Creek have no facilities, and access and conditions there change, so check locally before you go and do not plan a first visit after dark. In any natural geothermal pool, keep your head above the water at all times: amoebic meningitis is very rare but almost always fatal, and the amoeba enters through the nose. Never jump, dive or duck under, and never enter unmarked geothermal water, which can be scalding. Our free hot springs guide covers the rules in full.

Cold nights and what to bring

Rotorua nights are cool for much of the year. The long-term average overnight low is 3.7°C in July and 7.4°C in October, against pool water of 36–41°C at Polynesian Spa. Bring jandals or flip-flops for the walk between pools, a warm layer for the walk back to the car, and a water bottle. Polynesian Spa suggests no more than fifteen minutes at a time in the hotter pools and does not allow alcohol in pool areas. Remove silver jewellery, which the minerals tarnish. For the season-by-season picture, see our best time to visit guide.

Booking an evening slot

Booking ahead fixes your date, and the GetYourGuide tickets for Polynesian Spa and Wai Ariki can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before. Book before you head out for dinner, so the evening is settled.
