"Great experience but would've loved a little longer than 45mins. Loved the private space each tub has and that we had access to cold plunge. The outdoor location and setup was fantastic looking into beautiful nature. Would definitely go again but book for a longer option."

Rotorua Hot Pools and Cold Plunges
Where the cold water is, what each ticket includes, and how to do it safely.
For a hot soak followed by a cold plunge in Rotorua, book Secret Spot: your own cedar hot tub for 45 minutes, with shared plunge tubs at 12°C included, from $26 per person. For geothermal mineral water with the cold dip, Wai Ariki’s one-hour Restorative Bathing has the 12°C Puna Tio plunge pool, and the Polynesian Spa’s Deluxe Lake Spa has a cold plunge beside five hot pools on the lake. Cold water strains the heart, so if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or are pregnant, ask a doctor before you plunge, and get out at once if you feel dizzy.
Hot and cold options at a glance
| Venue and ticket | Hot water | Cold water | From (USD) | Gate price (NZD) | Best for |

| Secret Spot forest hot tub | Private cedar tub of heated fresh water | Shared Brass Monkeys plunge tubs, 12°C, included | $26 per person | NZ$46 per adult, 45 minutes | Couples, friends and a forest setting |

| Wai Ariki Restorative Journey | Geothermal pools, steam room, mud lounge | Puna Tio plunge and a fire and ice room | $100 per person | NZ$175, 2 hours | A full spa sequence |
| Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa | Five geothermal mineral pools, 36–41°C, by Lake Rotorua | Cold plunge pool | $48 per person | NZ$85, no time limit | A flexible lake-view soak |
The platform prices are what GetYourGuide and Viator charge in US dollars; the gate prices are the operators’ own, checked on 3 November 2026. Secret Spot heats fresh water, while Wai Ariki and the Polynesian Spa use geothermal mineral water, so pick one of those two if the minerals are the reason for your trip.
Secret Spot: a forest hot tub with cold plunge tubs
Book the Rotorua Forest Hot Tub Soak at Secret Spot for the simplest hot and cold session in town. It costs from $26 per person on Viator, rated 4.8 from 634 reviews, or NZ$46 per adult and NZ$18 per child aged 5 to 14 at the gate. Your group gets a cedar hot tub to itself for 45 minutes, with room for up to six, beside Whakarewarewa Forest on Waipa State Mill Road. The tubs hold heated fresh water, not geothermal mineral water.
The Brass Monkeys cedar plunge tubs, kept at 12°C, are included with every hot tub booking, along with a locker and the Shinny Dip foot tubs. The plunge tubs are shared between the hot tubs, so expect other guests at them; ask at check-in if that matters to you.
Secret Spot also sells the Private Sauna & Cold Plunge at Secret Spot Hot Tubs, a separate ticket: a hinoki wood sauna for up to four people for 40 minutes, with the 12°C plunge tubs and a cold shower, at NZ$46 per adult at the gate. The listing has only 4 reviews so far, rated 4.8. The sauna does not include a hot tub, so book two adjacent slots if you want both.
Before you go to Secret Spot
- Arrive 15 minutes before your slot to check in and change.
- Bring swimwear and a towel, or hire a towel at reception.
- Hot tubs open at 9am, the last booking is 9pm and the venue closes at 10pm; saunas open from 10am.
- Children under 5 are not allowed in the hot tubs or saunas, and children from 5 must be with a paying adult.
It suits a group after a ride in the forest or a couple who want a private tub and a cold dip without paying spa prices. Our Secret Spot guide covers the tubs, the bar and the sauna in more detail, and our private hot pools guide compares it with the other private soaks.
Wai Ariki Restorative Bathing: a lakefront circuit with a 12°C plunge
The Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa 1hr Restorative Bathing gives you an hour in five lake-view pools on the Rotorua lakefront, from the 12°C Puna Tio plunge to a geothermal pool at up to 41°C. It costs from $56 per person on GetYourGuide, rated 4.8 from 34 reviews, or NZ$99 at the gate, with a towel included. Everyone must be 16 or over.
| Pool | Published temperature | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Whangapipiro Geo Soak | 38–40°C | A gentle geothermal soak |
| Puna Wai Wera Geo Pool | 40–41°C | The hottest pool |
| Puna Tio Ice Cold Plunge | 12°C | The cold plunge |
| Wai Paheko Herbal Pool | 38–39°C | Warm herbal water |
| Wai Whakaoho Hydrotherapy Pool | 36°C | A milder warm pool |
The pools are shared with other guests, and Wai Ariki publishes these temperatures as a guide, so follow the staff on the day. Last entry is 9:45pm from November to April and 9:15pm from May to October. Read our review of the 1-hour bathing.
Restorative Bathing or the Restorative Journey
Book Restorative Bathing if you mainly want to move between the hot pools and the plunge. Book the longer Restorative Journey if you also want the steam room, the mud lounge and the guided blessings.
Wai Ariki Restorative Journey: the full hot and cold sequence
The Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa Restorative Journey (2hrs) is a seven-step, two-hour circuit shaped by Ngāti Whakaue knowledge of the local geothermal waters. You move through waterfall showers, the Tongariro fire and ice room, the lake-view pools with the 12°C plunge, a geothermal mud lounge and a steam room, with blessings at the start and finish. It costs from $100 per person on Viator, rated 4.7 from 127 reviews, the same journey sells for $98 on GetYourGuide, and the gate price is NZ$175. Locker, robe and towel are included, and everyone must be 16 or over.
The journey costs NZ$76 more than the one-hour bathing at the gate. Pay it if you want the steam, the mud and the guided sequence; book the hour if the plunge and the pools are what you came for. Last entry is 8:30pm from November to April and 8pm from May to October. Read our review of the journey or the full Wai Ariki guide.
Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa: lake-view pools with a cold plunge
The Polynesian Spa Rotorua: Deluxe Lake Spa Hot Spring Bathing on Hinemoa Street is the only Polynesian Spa ticket with a cold plunge. You get four alkaline Rachel Spring pools at 36 to 41°C and one acidic Priest Spring pool at 41°C, all 0.7 metres deep and looking over Lake Rotorua, plus a cold plunge pool about 2 metres by 1 metre, ten heated recliners and an indoor relaxation lounge. The spa does not publish the plunge temperature. Towels, lockers and toiletries are included.
It costs from $48 per person on GetYourGuide, rated 4.6 from 412 reviews, or NZ$85 at the gate for adults and children aged 2 and over. There is no time limit, the spa is open until 11pm with last entry at 10pm, and early mornings and evenings after 8pm are the quietest times. The Family Pools, Pavilion Pools and private pools do not include the plunge, so check you are booking the Deluxe Lake Spa. Read our review, our Polynesian Spa guide or Polynesian Spa vs Wai Ariki.
Choosing a cold plunge
For the lowest price
Secret Spot costs NZ$46 per adult for a 45-minute private tub with the plunge tubs included. The session is timed, so plan the rest of your day around it.
For geothermal water
Book Wai Ariki or the Deluxe Lake Spa. Both pair mineral hot pools with a separate cold plunge, while Secret Spot’s tubs are heated fresh water.
For a sauna and a cold plunge
Book Secret Spot’s private sauna, which includes the plunge tubs and a cold shower, and add a hot tub slot next to it if you want both. Wai Ariki’s Restorative Journey puts a fire and ice room, a steam room and the plunge in one ticket.
For a spa day
The Restorative Journey is the longest set sequence here, at two hours. The one-hour Restorative Bathing is the cheaper way to try the same pools and plunge.
For an unhurried lake-view soak
The Deluxe Lake Spa has no time limit, five hot pools, the plunge and towels included. Go early in the morning or after 8pm for a quieter visit.
What hot and cold bathing costs in Rotorua
At the operators’ gate prices for one adult, checked on 3 November 2026:
- NZ$46: a Secret Spot hot tub with the plunge tubs included.
- NZ$85: the Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa, with the cold plunge and five geothermal pools.
- NZ$99: Wai Ariki’s one-hour Restorative Bathing.
- NZ$175: Wai Ariki’s two-hour Restorative Journey.
For two adults, that comes to NZ$92, NZ$170, NZ$198 and NZ$350 before extras. Secret Spot charges each person in the tub. A higher price buys more time, geothermal water or extra rooms, not a colder plunge. Booked through GetYourGuide or Viator in US dollars, the same four start at $26, $48, $56 and $100 per person. Our Rotorua hot pools prices page compares every ticket in town.
Is contrast bathing safe?
A sudden cold plunge puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. It does not suit everyone, and a spa plunge is not a medical treatment.
If you have heart disease, high or uncontrolled blood pressure, circulation problems, a condition that makes you faint, or are pregnant, ask a doctor before you try hot and cold bathing. Follow the venue’s rules, drink water, and lower yourself into the cold water slowly. Do not hold your breath or breathe fast and deep before you go in.
Get out at once and ask staff for help if you feel dizzy, faint, short of breath or have chest pain. There is no set number of minutes to stay in the plunge, and a short, comfortable dip is enough.
Booking tips for a hot and cold session
- Check the ticket name. At the Polynesian Spa, only the Deluxe Lake Spa has the cold plunge. At Wai Ariki, the one-hour Restorative Bathing and the two-hour Restorative Journey are separate tickets.
- Expect to share the cold water. Your hot tub at Secret Spot is private, but its plunge tubs are shared, and the plunges at Wai Ariki and the Polynesian Spa sit in shared bathing areas.
- Book ahead for weekends, school holidays, evenings and the summer months from November to February.
- Bring swimwear. Wai Ariki’s Restorative Bathing and the Deluxe Lake Spa include towels; at Secret Spot, bring one or hire one.
- Allow time: 45 minutes at Secret Spot, one or two hours at Wai Ariki, plus changing and travel.
- Check the age rules. Secret Spot takes children from 5, Wai Ariki takes guests aged 16 and over, and the Deluxe Lake Spa is open to all ages, though a cold plunge is a separate question for a child.
- Check holiday hours around Christmas, New Year and public holidays, when venues can change their times.
A cold plunge in summer and winter
All three venues run their plunges all year. From December to February, a cold dip feels good after the hot pools, and it pairs well with a day of sightseeing or mountain biking; book early in the school holidays. From June to August, the cold air above hot water is part of the appeal, but the plunge feels harsher, so keep your dips short. For evening sessions, see our hot pools at night page.
Our pick for each kind of soak
Book Secret Spot for a forest hot tub with a quick cold plunge. Book Wai Ariki Restorative Bathing for geothermal pools with a named 12°C plunge, and move up to the Restorative Journey for steam, mud and a guided sequence. Book the Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa for lake views, mineral pools and a cold plunge with no time limit. Choose by whether you want privacy, geothermal water or a sauna, and how long you want to stay. Our best hot pools in Rotorua and thermal spas guide cover the rest of town.
When you have picked your slot, check availability for a Secret Spot tub with the plunge included.

Hot Pools and Cold Plunges in Rotorua: Questions
Where to find a cold plunge, what the tickets include, and how to go hot and cold safely.
Yes, at three venues. Wai Ariki has the Puna Tio plunge pool at 12°C, the Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa has a cold plunge pool beside its five hot mineral pools, and Secret Spot includes its shared cedar plunge tubs, also at 12°C, with every hot tub booking.
Book Secret Spot. You get your own cedar hot tub of heated fresh water for 45 minutes, and the cold plunge tubs are included in the price, from $26 per person on Viator or NZ$46 per adult at the gate. Our Secret Spot guide covers the tubs in detail.
Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa lists its Puna Tio Ice Cold Plunge at 12°C, part of the one-hour Restorative Bathing and the two-hour Restorative Journey. Secret Spot's Brass Monkeys plunge tubs are also kept at 12°C.
Yes, in the Deluxe Lake Spa, which costs NZ$85 at the gate or from $48 per person on GetYourGuide. The Family Pools, Pavilion Pools and private pools are separate tickets, so book the Deluxe Lake Spa if the plunge matters to you.
Yes. Secret Spot states that its cedar plunge tubs are complimentary with a hot tub booking. They are shared between the hot tubs, so other guests may use them while you are there.
No. Its cedar tubs hold heated fresh water. For geothermal mineral water with a cold plunge, book Wai Ariki or the Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa.
Yes. Secret Spot sells a private 40-minute hinoki sauna for up to four people with its 12°C plunge tubs and a cold shower, at NZ$46 per adult; the hot tub is a separate booking. Wai Ariki's Restorative Journey includes a fire and ice room, a steam room and the cold plunge in one two-hour ticket.
Secret Spot, at NZ$46 per adult at the gate or from $26 per person on Viator, for a 45-minute hot tub with the cold plunge tubs included. The Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa is next at NZ$85, then Wai Ariki's Restorative Bathing at NZ$99.
Age limits at the door are one thing, and plunging safely is another. Secret Spot takes children from 5, the Deluxe Lake Spa is open to all ages and Wai Ariki is 16 and over. Cold water can shock a child more than an adult, so follow the staff's guidance and never push anyone into a plunge.
You book the hot tub or spa session, not the plunge pool itself. Book ahead for weekends, school holidays and evenings, especially at Secret Spot and Wai Ariki, where sessions have fixed times.
Sudden cold water puts extra strain on the heart and blood vessels. If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, circulation problems, a condition that causes fainting, or are pregnant, ask a doctor first.
