"Great experience but would've loved a little longer than 45mins. Loved the private space each tub has and that we had access to cold plunge. The outdoor location and setup was fantastic looking into beautiful nature. Would definitely go again but book for a longer option."

For Couples
Romantic Hot Springs in Rotorua
Six ways to soak together, and what couples should know before booking.
For most couples, the most romantic soak in Rotorua is an evening at Secret Spot: your own cedar hot tub at the edge of the forest, with drinks brought from the bar while you sit in the water. The tubs hold heated fresh spring water. If the point of the trip is geothermal water, book Wai Ariki’s private bath for two or a late soak in the Polynesian Spa’s lakeside rock pools. Below are six date plans, each with the ticket to book.
Six date plans for two
| Date plan | What to book | Best for | From (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A forest tub after dark | Secret Spot forest hot tub soak | An evening with a drink in hand | $26 per person |
| A lakefront spa journey | Wai Ariki Restorative Journey | A slow afternoon, adults only | $100 per person |
| A private bath for two | Wai Ariki private geothermal bath | Privacy and pampering | $152 per booking of up to 2 |
| Rock pools by the lake | Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa | A late soak with lake views | $48 per person |
| A mud bath together | Hell’s Gate walk, mud bath and spa | A playful afternoon | $65 per person |
| A paddle to a hot pool | Lake Rotoiti evening kayak | A summer evening outdoors | $131 per person |
A forest tub after dark
Book the Rotorua Forest Hot Tub Soak at Secret Spot for after dinner. Secret Spot is open until 10pm, and on a clear night you see the stars above the forest from your tub. Each cedar tub takes up to six, so as a couple you get plenty of room, and a button at the tub calls the bar for craft beer, cider or Mills Reef wine. The soak lasts 45 minutes, from $26 per person, and rates 4.8 from 634 reviews. Plants screen each tub, though neighbouring tubs sit about 8 metres away and are visible. Read our review or the full Secret Spot guide.
A lakefront spa journey
The Wai Ariki Restorative Journey is a two-hour, seven-step walk through Wai Ariki’s spa on the Rotorua lakefront: a blessing, waterfall showers, a fire and ice room, geothermal pools with views over Lake Rotorua and Mokoia Island, a geothermal mud lounge and a steam room. Locker, robe and towel are included. Everyone must be 16 or over, which keeps the mood calm. It costs from $100 per person on Viator, rated 4.7 from 125 reviews, and the same journey sells for $98 on GetYourGuide. Last entry is 8:30pm from November to April and 8pm from May to October.
A private bath for two
For a room to yourselves, book Wai Ariki’s Private Luxury Geothermal Bath Experience. A host walks you to the Ngāwhā baths, where two single tubs of geothermal mineral water sit side by side in one room. You get robes, herbal tea and a bath caddy each, with a mud mask and scrub. The price is $152 per booking for up to two. The listing has only 4 reviews so far, with a 4.4 rating. Our private hot pools guide compares it with every other private soak in town.
Rock pools by the lake
The Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa has five open-air mineral pools between 36 and 41°C, set among rocks and gardens beside Lake Rotorua, plus heated recliners and a relaxation lounge. Towels, lockers and toiletries are included. The spa is open until 11pm with last entry at 10pm, so it works as a late date. The Deluxe area is open to all ages, so it is not an adults-only soak. It costs from $48 per person, rated 4.6 from 409 reviews. The spa’s own site also sells day-spa retreats for couples, including one called Deluxe Romantic, which pair a Deluxe Lake Spa soak with treatments over about three hours.
A mud bath together
For a couple who like to laugh at each other, the Hell’s Gate Geothermal Walk & Mud Spa combines a walk through the geothermal reserve with a mud bath, a sulphur spa and a cool plunge, from $65 per person. It rates 4.7 from 1,277 reviews. The mud bath is limited to 20 minutes per person per day. From 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, Hell’s Gate stays open until 9pm, with last entry for the full experience at 5:30pm. Our mud baths guide covers what to expect.
A paddle to a hot pool
From 1 November to 30 April, the Lake Rotoiti Evening Kayak Tour takes you across Lake Rotoiti with a guide to natural hot springs for a soak, a Kiwi barbecue dinner and lakeside caves to see glowworms as the sun goes down. It lasts six hours, from $131 per person, and rates 4.9 from 65 reviews. You need a moderate level of fitness. Read our review.
What couples should know before booking
Check the age rules if you are bringing anyone else. Wai Ariki takes guests aged 16 and over for all bathing, and the Polynesian Spa’s Pavilion Pools are 12 and over, while the Deluxe Lake Spa is open to all ages.
Pregnancy changes the plan. Wai Ariki cannot accommodate pregnant guests in its bathing or thermal experiences, and the Hell’s Gate and Secret Spot listings do not recommend them for pregnant travellers. Polynesian Spa advises checking with a doctor first.
Take your rings off before a geothermal soak. The minerals at the Polynesian Spa can tarnish silver and some gold, and Hell’s Gate recommends waiting 24 to 48 hours before putting jewellery back on after its mud and sulphur water.
Plan drinks around the venue. Secret Spot brings drinks from its own bar to the tub, but you cannot bring your own alcohol. The Polynesian Spa bans alcohol and glassware in its pool areas.
Book evenings ahead, since the late slots are the ones couples want. Our hot pools at night page lists each closing time. If you want to stay near the pools, see our where to stay guide, and if you are choosing between the two lakefront spas, read Polynesian Spa vs Wai Ariki.
When you have picked your evening, check availability for a Secret Spot tub for two.

Romantic Hot Springs in Rotorua: Questions
Where couples soak together, date night ideas, spa packages and what to know before you book.
For a date night, our pick is an evening at Secret Spot, where the two of you get your own cedar tub at the forest edge and order drinks from the bar without leaving the water. Its tubs hold heated fresh spring water. For geothermal water, book Wai Ariki's private bath for two or a late soak in the Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa rock pools beside Lake Rotorua.
Wai Ariki's private geothermal bath gives two people a room with two single tubs side by side, from $152 per booking. Secret Spot gives you your own cedar tub for 45 minutes from $26 per person, and the Polynesian Spa's private pools are booked with the spa by two adults aged 16 or over. Our private hot pools guide compares them all.
Soak in a forest tub at Secret Spot, open until 10pm, with drinks brought to the tub. Book a late session in the Polynesian Spa's lakeside pools, open until 11pm with last entry at 10pm. Between November and April, join an evening kayak on Lake Rotoiti with a hot pool soak, a barbecue dinner and glowworms. See our hot pools at night page for timings.
Rotorua suits a honeymoon built around bathing. Couples can book a two-hour spa journey at Wai Ariki, a private geothermal bath for two, forest hot tubs at Secret Spot and lakeside pools at the Polynesian Spa within a short drive of each other. Add a day of mud and geothermal walking at Hell's Gate, and a summer evening kayak to a hot pool on Lake Rotoiti.
The Deluxe Lake Spa has five open-air rock pools by Lake Rotorua, heated recliners and towels included, but it is open to all ages. The Pavilion Pools are 12 and over, and the Lake View private pools give two adults 16 and over their own rock pool for 45 minutes. Our Polynesian Spa pools compared page sets them side by side.
Yes. The Polynesian Spa sells day-spa retreats, including one called Deluxe Romantic, which pair a Deluxe Lake Spa soak with treatments over about three hours. Wai Ariki sells its Restorative Journey and a private bath for two on the booking platforms, and a package with a 90-minute journey and a 45-minute private pool on its own site. See our Wai Ariki guide.
Wai Ariki is: every guest at its bathing and spa experiences must be 16 or over. The Polynesian Spa's Pavilion Pools are 12 and over, and its private pools need two adults aged 16 or over. The Deluxe Lake Spa and Hell's Gate take children, and Secret Spot allows children from 5 with a paying adult, so pick Wai Ariki for an adults-only evening.
Not your own. Secret Spot does not allow outside alcohol, but its bar delivers craft beer, cider and Mills Reef wine to your tub at the press of a button. The Polynesian Spa bans alcohol and glassware in its pool areas, and Wai Ariki's private bath does not allow alcohol. Read our Secret Spot review for the tub-side service.
Yes. Secret Spot's outdoor cedar tubs are open until 10pm, and on a clear night you see the stars above the forest. The Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa pools are open-air and the spa stays open until 11pm. From November to April, the Lake Rotoiti evening kayak ends its hot pool trip at sunset with glowworms in the lakeside caves.
Check first. Wai Ariki cannot accommodate pregnant guests in its bathing or thermal experiences. The Secret Spot, Hell's Gate and Lake Rotoiti kayak listings do not recommend them for pregnant travellers, and the Polynesian Spa advises consulting a doctor before you bathe. Speak to your doctor before booking any geothermal soak during pregnancy.
Bring swimwear and a towel, though towels and robes can be hired at Secret Spot and are included at the Deluxe Lake Spa and Wai Ariki's private bath. Leave rings and silver jewellery in the locker, because geothermal minerals can tarnish silver and some gold. At Hell's Gate, use old swimwear, since it will smell of sulphur afterwards.
