How the Private Bath Works

From the booking to the bath caddy.

  2. Arrive at the lakefront

Wai Ariki is at 1047 Whakaue Street on the Rotorua lakefront. Transfers are not included, so walk from the city centre, drive or take a taxi.

A host walks you to the Ngāwhā baths: one private room with two single tubs of geothermal mineral water, private showers, robes and towels.

  4. Use the bath caddy

Private Pools Guide

Where to Get a Private Hot Pool in Rotorua

What private means at each venue, who can book and what it costs.

For a private hot pool in Rotorua on a day visit, you have four venues to choose from: Wai Ariki’s private geothermal bath, Polynesian Spa’s Lake View and Sky View private pools, Secret Spot’s cedar tubs, and Waikite Valley’s private pools about 30 minutes out of town. Only two of them sell through the booking platforms. Our pick for two adults is Wai Ariki’s Private Luxury Geothermal Bath Experience, from $152 per booking for up to two people, which works out at $76 each.

What private means at each venue

Private covers different things in Rotorua. At some venues you get your own pool in a screened area; at Wai Ariki you get a room. The water differs too, and so do the rules on who can book.

Platform prices are in US dollars, and gate prices are in New Zealand dollars on the venues’ own websites. Polynesian Spa does not say whether its private pool prices are per person or per pool, so check that when you book.

Wai Ariki’s private bath, in detail

The private bath comes with more extras than any other private soak in this guide. A host walks you to the Ngāwhā baths, where you have a room to yourselves with two single tubs of geothermal mineral water. You sit in separate tubs side by side, so it suits friends as well as couples. The booking includes robes and towels for two, private showers with personal care products, and herbal tea. Each of you gets a bath caddy with a herbal soak bag, bath salts, herbal soap, a mud mask and a mud scrub.

Entry to Wai Ariki’s other experiences is not included, and neither are transfers. The listing has only 4 reviews so far, with a 4.4 rating, so there is little guest feedback to go on yet. Wai Ariki’s own site lists its Ngāwhā bathing ritual for one or two guests at 75 minutes; the GetYourGuide listing gives no length. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead. Read our review for the rest.

Wai Ariki takes guests aged 16 and over for all bathing, and it cannot accommodate pregnant guests in its thermal experiences. It also has a separate private geothermal pool called Puna Tūmataiti, for two to four guests at 36 to 39°C, which the spa sells directly. Its Private Pool + Journey package for two pairs 45 minutes in a private pool with the two-hour Restorative Journey and a grazing platter, about three hours in all, for NZ$470 per couple. For everything else at the spa, see our Wai Ariki guide.

Polynesian Spa’s private pools

The Polynesian Spa runs two kinds of private pool, both filled with alkaline Rachel Spring water at 38.5°C for a 45-minute soak, with towels and changing rooms included. The Lake View Private Pools are rock pools with views over Sulphur Bay and an outdoor shower. The Sky View Private Pools are cubicle-style rock pools with open roofs.

Every private pool booking must be made and attended by two adults aged 16 or over. These pools are not sold on GetYourGuide or Viator, so you book them with the spa. For how they compare with the spa’s shared Deluxe and Pavilion areas, see our Polynesian Spa pools compared page.

Secret Spot’s cedar tubs

Secret Spot is the private soak for groups. One booking gives up to six people their own cedar tub for 45 minutes, and children aged 5 and over can join a paying adult. The Rotorua Forest Hot Tub Soak at Secret Spot costs from $26 per person on Viator, rated 4.8 from 634 reviews, the lowest price for a private soak among the tickets on this site.

The water is fresh spring water heated to just under 40°C, with no geothermal minerals. Plants screen each tub, but the operator says neighbouring tubs are about 8 metres away and visible. The full venue guide is on our Secret Spot Hot Tubs page.

Waikite Valley’s private pools

Waikite’s private pools sit in the countryside about 30 minutes’ drive from Rotorua. A 40-minute session costs NZ$35 per person and includes entry to the public pools, so you can soak before or after. The pools are 1.6 metres across and the operator says they are most suitable for two. Two adults aged 16 or over must be in the pool at all times, private pools run daily from 11am to 6pm, and bookings are essential. See our Waikite Valley guide.

Which private pool to book

  • Two adults who want geothermal water, robes and a room to themselves: Wai Ariki’s private bath.
  • A lake view for two on a smaller spend: Polynesian Spa’s Lake View pools, booked with the spa.
  • A family or group of friends: Secret Spot, the only one here that takes six and children from 5.
  • A country drive and a longer day in the pools: Waikite Valley.
  • A private pool in your hotel room: see our where to stay guide.

If you are planning a date or an anniversary, our romantic hot springs page builds whole evenings around these pools.

Before you book

Remove jewellery before any geothermal soak, because the minerals can tarnish silver and some gold. Polynesian Spa advises people who are pregnant or have a heart condition to check with a doctor first. Private pools at these venues are managed sites. Wild pools in the bush carry a risk of amoebic meningitis, so keep your head above the water there; our free hot springs guide has the details. When you are ready, check availability for Wai Ariki’s private bath.

What Private Bath Guests Say

4.4/5 from 4 verified guests

Ratings and review counts are each platform's live figures (Viator or GetYourGuide) as of October 2026 and may shift slightly day to day.

"We absolutely loved the Ngawha Deluxe for Two! We were two friends catching up over the weekend, and the private tubs in the room worked perfectly. The room was warm and relaxing, just the right space to chat and unwind. The mud scrub was a highlight, super fun and left our skin feeling amazing. We really liked there was a choice of three teas too - it is such a nice touch. The whole experience felt really relaxing and a special treat. Ideal if you want a bit of pampering and a chance to unwind."
