Polynesian Spa Guide

Polynesian Spa: What to Know Before You Go

The four bathing areas, the hours, the rules and the right ticket.

Polynesian Spa is the large bathing complex on the Rotorua lakefront, with 28 hot pools fed by two springs, split into four bathing areas and open every day from 9am to 11pm. For a first visit, book the Deluxe Lake Spa: it takes all ages, includes towels and lockers, and its five mineral pools sit at the edge of Lake Rotorua. Online tickets start at $48 per person, and the listing rates 4.6 from 409 reviews. Read our review.

The four bathing areas

A ticket buys entry to one area, so the first decision is where you want to soak. Online prices below are the GetYourGuide prices in US dollars; gate prices are the spa’s own “from” prices in New Zealand dollars.

The Deluxe Lake Spa is the quieter lake-edge area with the most included. The Pavilion Pools give teens and adults more pools for a lower ticket price, and our Deluxe vs Pavilion comparison goes through that choice pool by pool. The Family Pools are where children can splash about and use the slide, covered on our family hot pools page. The private pools are booked with the spa directly, and our private hot pools guide sets them beside Rotorua’s other private soaks.

Two springs, two kinds of water

Every pool here draws on one of two springs. Priest Spring water is slightly acidic and sulphate-rich. Rachel Spring water is alkaline and rich in sodium silicate. The Deluxe Lake Spa has four Rachel Spring pools and one Priest Spring pool, the Pavilion has five Rachel Spring pools and three from Priest Spring, and the Family Pools and private pools use Rachel Spring water.

Bathing on this site goes back to 1878, when a Catholic priest, Father Mahoney, reportedly began soaking in the spring that now carries his title. Rachel Spring water has been piped to the site since 1902, and Polynesian Spa itself opened in 1972. Māori bathed in Rotorua’s geothermal waters for centuries before any of that.

Opening hours and how long you can stay

The spa opens every day of the year, public holidays included, from 9am to 11pm. Last entry to the pools is 10pm, and bathers are asked to leave the water from 10:40pm so the pools can be emptied and cleaned. The Deluxe Lake Spa and Family Pools tickets are untimed, so you can stay all day on the date you booked. The private pools run as 45-minute sessions.

The Family Pools listing warns of a 30 to 60 minute wait to get in at busy times because of capacity limits, and its booking times are indicative. Arriving in the evening, after day visitors have gone, is a popular way to soak, and our Rotorua hot pools at night page compares closing times across town.

What to bring and what is provided

  • Proper swimwear. Cotton, denim, leggings and underwear are not allowed in the pools. Swimsuits can be hired or bought at the Spa Essentials Shop.
  • A towel, unless you have a Deluxe ticket. The Deluxe Lake Spa includes towels, secure lockers, hairdryers and toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap and body lotion). In the Pavilion Pools, towels and lockers are hired on site, with free storage tubs if you do not need a lock.
  • Jandals and a refillable water bottle, the two items on the Deluxe packing list.
  • Nothing silver. Take jewellery off before you get in, because the mineral water can tarnish silver and some gold.

The spa is cashless and takes contactless cards. Alcohol and glass are banned in the pool areas, and the spa advises against bathing after a drink.

Health and children’s rules

Polynesian Spa asks bathers to spend no more than about fifteen minutes at a time in the hotter pools, to move between hotter and cooler water, and to drink plenty of fluids. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition, high blood pressure or another serious medical condition, check with your doctor before you go.

Children under 12 must come with an adult, and children under 8 must be actively supervised in the water by a carer aged 16 or over. Infants under 2 enter the Deluxe Lake Spa free, and children under 5 enter the Family Pools free if they wear swim nappies. The Pavilion Pools take no one under 12. In any hot pool, keep your head above the water; our free hot springs page explains why that rule matters most in natural, unlined pools.

Getting there and parking

Polynesian Spa is at 1000 Hinemoa Street, on the shore of Lake Rotorua in the city center. If you drive, park beside the building in the designated parking area. If a bus drops you off, ask the driver to stop under the main arch by the front door. Wai Ariki, the newer spa for guests aged 16 and over, is also on the lakefront, and our Polynesian Spa vs Wai Ariki page compares the two.

Rotorua is about 2.5 hours’ drive from Auckland. Two GetYourGuide day trips from Auckland include Polynesian Spa entry with hotel pickup: the Rotorua Māori Village & Polynesian Spa with Haka adds Whakarewarewa village and its cultural performances, from $222 per person and rated 4.8 from 62 reviews, and the Wai-O-Tapu & Polynesian Spa Rotorua Day Tour adds Wai-O-Tapu, from $213 per person and rated 4.7 from 37 reviews. Our Rotorua hot springs from Auckland page covers the drive, the bus and the other tours.

Booking online or at the gate

The three tickets on this site are GetYourGuide listings for a single area, each with a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead. The same Deluxe, Pavilion and Family tickets are also sold on Viator. The spa’s own prices are in New Zealand dollars and the platform prices are in US dollars, so convert before you compare.

If you plan to soak more than once, the spa sells a concession pass of 10 visits for the price of 8, NZ$439.60 and valid for six months, plus Double Dipper combos and day-spa packages direct. Our Rotorua hot pools prices page lines Polynesian Spa up against every other venue in town.

When you have picked your day, check Deluxe Lake Spa availability.
