Hell's Gate Guide

Hell's Gate Rotorua: Which Ticket, When to Go, What to Bring

The three tickets, the mud bath routine, opening hours and the age rules.

Hell’s Gate is the geothermal park and outdoor mud spa at Tikitere, just east of Rotorua, and for a first visit the ticket to book is the Hell’s Gate Geothermal Walk & Mud Spa. It bundles the walk through the reserve, the mud bath, the sulphur spas, the cool plunge pool and a Māori carving session for $65 per person, and with 1,277 reviews at 4.7 it is the most-reviewed listing on this site. If you only want the mud, a cheaper mud-and-spa ticket exists, and walkers can skip the bathing altogether.

Which Hell’s Gate ticket to book

Hell’s Gate sells three things: the walk, the mud bath with the sulphur spas, and the two together. The booking platforms carry all three, so the choice comes down to how much of the afternoon you want to spend there.

The Hell’s Gate Mud Bath & Spas ticket on Viator suits anyone who has already seen enough steaming ground at Wai-O-Tapu or Te Puia and wants to go straight to the bathing. The same product is also sold on GetYourGuide from $51. The Hell’s Gate Geothermal Walk suits travellers who want the landscape without getting wet, or a family where someone is too young or unable to bathe.

Prices above are in US dollars, as the platforms show them. On Hell’s Gate’s own website the adult gate prices are in New Zealand dollars: NZ$115 for the full experience, NZ$90 for the mud bath and spas, and NZ$45 for the walk, with child and family prices as well.

Our breakdowns go further: the walk, mud bath and spa review and the mud bath and spa review.

What happens at the mud bath

The mud bath is a pool of warm geothermal mud that you sit in and spread over your skin. Hell’s Gate limits it to 20 minutes per person per day for health and safety. After the mud you rinse under a cool shower, move into the hot sulphur spa to soak, and finish in the cool plunge pool if your ticket includes it. Changing rooms and showers are on site.

Local Māori have used the mud and sulphur water here for more than 800 years. The operator describes the mud as gently exfoliating and softening the skin. Expect a warm, open-air soak with steam drifting over the reserve.

Bring old swimwear. The listings warn that swimwear and towels come away smelling of sulphur and need a thorough wash. If you forget yours, swimwear and towels can be hired at reception for NZ$5 per item, subject to availability. Take off all jewellery before you go in: the minerals tarnish most metals, silver especially, and the operator suggests waiting 24 to 48 hours before putting it back on.

The geothermal walk

The walk loops through the reserve past fumaroles, boiling pools, an active mud volcano and sulphur crystals. Allow about an hour to an hour and a half. Free guided walks leave at 10:30am and 2:30pm, and a self-guide map is handed out for any other time. The operator calls it an all-weather walk and says the park is at its best in the rain, when the steam thickens.

The bush section leads to Kākahi Falls, which is billed as the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. The English name reportedly honours George Bernard Shaw, who visited in 1934. The area itself is Tikitere. The Māori carving session after the walk is free with the walk and combined tickets, open to ages 12 and over, and subject to availability.

Opening hours and getting there

Hell’s Gate opens every day except Christmas Day, from 10am to 9pm, with last entry at 5:30pm for the combined experience and for the walk, and 7:30pm for the mud bath and spas. The official site publishes no separate winter timetable, so check the contact page before an evening visit in case the hours change.

To drive, head east from Rotorua on State Highway 30. About five minutes past the airport, turn right toward Whakatāne, and Hell’s Gate is 3 km down that road. A free shuttle runs from central Rotorua, but you need to book it ahead. Our Rotorua hot springs map shows where it sits against the lakefront spas.

Kids, pregnancy and health

Children can join from a young age: the minimum is two and a half years for the mud bath and six months for the sulphur spa, and under-15s must be supervised at all times. The carving is for ages 12 and over. The listings say the bathing is not suitable for pregnant women or for people with heart problems or high blood pressure, so check with your doctor first if any of that applies. The walk involves uneven ground and is not suited to people with limited mobility. Families looking for warm water with a hydroslide should compare our family hot pools guide.

How Hell’s Gate fits a Rotorua trip

Hell’s Gate is the only place on this site where you sit in a full outdoor mud bath. The lakefront spas in town are mineral water: our Polynesian Spa guide and best hot pools in Rotorua cover those. If you want to compare mud options, including the mud lounge inside Wai Ariki’s two-hour journey, read Rotorua mud baths. With summer opening until 9pm, a late mud bath after a day elsewhere is easy, and our hot pools at night page lists the other late soaks.

Coming from Auckland? The Rotorua hot springs from Auckland page compares the day trips, including one that builds the day around the Hell’s Gate mud spa.

When you have your date, check availability for the walk, mud bath and spa.

"One of my favourite places to visit in Rotorua. This place never disappoints. Plenty to do and lots of fun for the whole family. From the guided walk, carvings and the mud spa/sulphur pool, there is something for everyone. Would highly recommend."

"We were following in my husband’s late mother’s footsteps who visited the site over 36 years ago. We joined the tour and were given a lot of very interesting information. This took 1.5 hours then we were warmed up in the mud baths & pools. Skin has never felt so good 😊 Well worth the money!"

"We were very sceptical going here as we’d previously been to the thermal parks elsewhere and struggled with the smell so the idea of laying in it was a bit worrying. But it was great, the walk again was smelly but great to see, the wood carving was fun, even being able to take a piece home. The spas itself was lovely and relaxing with little to no smell, you do still have to wash your bathers afterwards though. 😅 Overall, it was a lovely and relaxing experience."

Sharnie Australia

"The guide was great and the mud bath was awesome !"

Dawn Australia

"The mud baths were fun and unique. The geothermal area was really cool. The wood carving was a great souvenir to take back and the staff over there were very friendly."

Rehan United Kingdom

"We had the BEST time at Hell's Gate. The guided tour was excellent thanks to Liam; very funny guy with lots of informative Māori stories. The mud bath was a really cool experience paired with the sulphur baths. The cold plunge is worth doing once ... that's more than enough! The wood carving was a fantastic way to finish the trip. I was expecting a bit of a tourist trap but it was 3 hours very well spent."
