Hot Pools With Kids
Which pools take children, from what age, and how to keep the day safe.
The best hot pool in Rotorua for a family with young children is the Polynesian Spa Family Pools: a heated freshwater pool with a small hydroslide, two mineral pools for the adults, lifeguards on duty, and free entry for children under 5. The Family Pools ticket starts at $19 per person, the lowest price of any ticket on this site, and rates 4.5 from 24 reviews. Read our review. Beyond that one area, age rules decide where a family can go, because several of Rotorua’s best-known spas take no children at all.
Check the youngest member of your group against this table before you plan the day.
| Venue | Youngest allowed | Rules for children |
|---|---|---|
| Polynesian Spa Family Pools | All ages | Under 5 free in swim nappies; under 8 actively supervised by an adult 16+ |
| Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa | All ages | Under 2 free; children asked to keep noise down |
| Polynesian Spa Pavilion Pools | 12 | Must come with an adult |
| Hell’s Gate mud bath / sulphur spa | 2.5 years / 6 months | Under 15 supervised at all times; mud 20 minutes per person per day |
| Secret Spot cedar hot tubs | 5 | Child rate 5–14, with a paying adult |
| Waikite Valley Thermal Pools | All ages | Child rate 5–15; 8 and under actively supervised by a caregiver 16+ |
| Lake Rotoiti evening kayak (Nov–Apr) | 5 | Must come with an adult |
| Wai Ariki | 16 | No children in the bathing areas |
Wai Ariki is the one to cross off with kids: bathing and spa experiences are for guests 16 and over. At Polynesian Spa, any child under 12 needs an adult with them in every area.
The centerpiece is a large chlorinated freshwater pool heated to 33°C, with shallow and deeper sections and a small hydroslide. Next to it are two Rachel Spring alkaline mineral pools, one at 37°C and one at 40°C, placed so parents can soak and still keep an eye on the slide. Lifeguards supervise the area. The ticket is untimed, so you can stay all day on the date you booked, within the spa’s hours of 9am to 11pm.
Changing rooms have room for families, with showers. Towels and swimsuits are for hire, lockers are for rent, and swim nappies, required for babies and toddlers, are sold on site. Food is not included, but the 88Ra Café on site sells meals, smoothies, juices and gelato.
Plan for a queue in school holidays and at weekends. The listing warns that at busy times there can be a 30 to 60 minute wait to enter while the area is at capacity, and that booking times are indicative.
Polynesian Spa’s other areas are covered on our Polynesian Spa guide. If your children are 12 or over, the Deluxe vs Pavilion comparison helps you choose between the two quieter areas.
The pools in the Family area span a range you can use: 33°C in the freshwater pool, 37°C and 40°C in the mineral pools. Polynesian Spa advises everyone to spend no more than about fifteen minutes at a time in the hotter pools, to move between hotter and cooler water and to drink plenty. With small children that rhythm works well: swim and slide in the 33°C pool, warm up for short spells in the 37°C pool, and keep the 40°C pool for adults taking turns. If anyone in the family has a heart condition, or is pregnant, check with a doctor first.
The Deluxe Lake Spa at Polynesian Spa takes all ages and includes towels and lockers, from $48 per person. Its pools are shallow, 0.7 metres deep, and the area is calm: children are asked to keep quiet, so it suits older or quieter children better than a toddler in full splash mode.
Hell’s Gate is the family mud bath. The Hell’s Gate Geothermal Walk & Mud Spa combines a 1 to 1.5 hour walk through the geothermal park with a mud bath, sulphur spas and a cool plunge pool, from $65 per person. It rates 4.7 from 1,277 reviews, the most-reviewed listing on this site. Children can go in the mud from age 2.5 and the sulphur spa from six months, for 20 minutes of mud per person per day. Pack old swimwear, because it comes out smelling of sulphur. Our Hell’s Gate guide and Rotorua mud baths page cover it in more depth, and there is our walk, mud bath and spa review.
At Secret Spot, the Rotorua Forest Hot Tub Soak gives your group its own cedar hot tub of heated fresh spring water for 45 minutes, beside the Whakarewarewa Forest, from $26 per person and rated 4.8 from 634 reviews. Children aged 5 and over can use the tubs. Details are on our Secret Spot page.
For an older, active family between 1 November and 30 April, the Lake Rotoiti Evening Kayak Tour paddles to hot springs, then on to glowworms and a BBQ dinner over about six hours, from $131 per person and rated 4.9 from 65 reviews. The minimum age is 5, and paddlers need moderate fitness.
Waikite Valley, about 30 minutes’ drive from town, has general pools from 30–34°C in The Tubs up to 39–41°C, and a family pass of NZ$73.50 for two adults and two children at the gate. Our Waikite Valley page has the details.
Rotorua’s free natural pools are a different matter with children. Natural outdoor pools carry the highest risk of amoebic meningitis, a very rare infection that is almost always fatal. The rule is to keep your head above the water at all times and never jump, dive, splash or duck under, because that forces water up the nose. That is a hard rule to hold a young child to. Never enter unmarked geothermal water, which can be scalding, and stay out of fenced geothermal areas.
Kerosene Creek is the best-known free spot. Access and conditions there change, so check locally before you go, and apply the same head-above-water rule. Our free hot springs page covers it in full.
Polynesian Spa also sells its own Family Double Dipper combo direct, listed from NZ$374.95 for two adults and two children. For a full cost picture across venues, see our Rotorua hot pools prices page.

"The family pools were so much fun, all my Grandchildren loved them and having a life guard on site was awesome 👌"

"Great area for the younger children lovely to hear the excitement from the younguns"
"Very good; you can also do it with a small child."
"Regarding the Deluxe Spa, the Polynesia Family Spa is too much for the baby and very small; the Deluxe was excellent."
"We did the family pool so did not see the adult side which may have been lovely. I will say the kids had a fabulous time playing in the heated pool with a slide. Unfortunately even though both our kids could swim one parent had to remain submerged in the kids pool at all times. The two hot tubs overlooking were nice and warm but the whole kids area was dated and worn. We would have gone to a more natural hot spring in the mountains but were concerned about the risk of brain infections from the water and the kids pool here was chlorinated. In all it was better than nothing but hardly a true geothermal spa experience."

For young children, the Polynesian Spa Family Pools are the best fit: a 33°C freshwater pool with a small hydroslide, two mineral pools for adults, lifeguards, and free entry for under-5s, from $19 per person. Older children can add the Hell's Gate mud bath (from age 2.5) or a Secret Spot cedar hot tub (from age 5).
Yes, in two of its areas. The Family Pools and the Deluxe Lake Spa take all ages; the Pavilion Pools take guests 12 and over. Children under 12 must come with an adult, and under-8s must be actively supervised in the water by a carer aged 16 or over. Our Polynesian Spa guide covers each area.
It depends on the venue. Polynesian Spa's Family Pools and Deluxe Lake Spa take all ages, the Pavilion Pools 12+. Hell's Gate allows the sulphur spa from six months and the mud bath from 2.5 years. Secret Spot's tubs and the Lake Rotoiti evening kayak start at age 5. Wai Ariki takes guests 16 and over only.
The freshwater pool with the hydroslide is heated to 33°C. The two Rachel Spring mineral pools beside it are 37°C and 40°C. Polynesian Spa advises no more than about fifteen minutes at a time in the hotter pools, moving between hot and cooler water and drinking plenty, which suits short warm-ups for children between swims.
Babies are welcome: children under 5 enter the Family Pools free, but they must wear swimming nappies, which are sold on site. Under-8s must be actively supervised in the water by an adult aged 16 or over. The 33°C freshwater pool is the gentlest water in the area, and the changing rooms have space for families.
Yes. Polynesian Spa requires infants and toddlers to wear swimming nappies in the Family Pools, and the Deluxe Lake Spa listing says the same for babies. If you forget them, swim nappies can be bought at the Family Pools. Older children need purpose-made swimwear, since cotton and denim are not allowed in the pools.
Yes, at the Polynesian Spa Family Pools. The large freshwater pool, heated to 33°C, has a small hydroslide, with shallow and deeper sections for different ages and swimming levels. Lifeguards supervise the area. The other Polynesian Spa areas and Rotorua's other spas do not list a slide.
It suits children who are happy to get muddy. The mud bath is open from age 2.5 and the sulphur spa from six months, with a 20-minute mud limit per person per day, and under-15s must be supervised at all times. The walk takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Pack old swimwear, which will smell of sulphur. See our Hell's Gate guide.
There are free natural pools near Rotorua, but they carry the highest risk of amoebic meningitis, so everyone must keep their head above the water and never jump, dive, splash or duck under. That is hard with young children. Never enter unmarked geothermal water. Our free hot springs page explains the options and the safety rules.
Kerosene Creek is a natural, unlined stream with no facilities, and access and conditions there change, so check locally before you go. Natural pools like it carry the amoebic meningitis risk: keep every head above the water and never let children jump, dive or duck under. For a younger family, a managed pool such as the Polynesian Spa Family Pools is simpler.
Bring purpose-made swimwear for everyone, swim nappies for babies, a towel each unless you plan to hire, a change of clothes, sunscreen and water bottles. Leave jewellery at home, because the mineral water tarnishes silver. For Hell's Gate, pack old swimwear. Food is not included at the Family Pools, but the 88Ra Café sells meals and gelato.
