Best Time to Visit Rotorua Hot Springs: Season, Weather & Time of Day
Rotorua’s hot pools are fed by geothermal springs and are open in every month of the year. This guide compares the months for a wider Rotorua trip, explains how the time of day changes a soak, lists the venue hours through the year and lets you check your own date.
If your dates are already fixed, use the date checker below to see which pools are open on your day and until when, what time it gets dark, any school or public holiday, and the evening forecast.
Rotorua’s main hot pools are open year-round, although all but one close on Christmas Day and one out of town closes for two weeks in February. There is no single best month: the pools work well in every season. The geothermal water changes little in temperature through the year, so the time of day matters more than the month. It gets dark by around 6pm from May to August, but not until about 9pm in December and January.
If you are still choosing dates for Rotorua, February and March are especially good months for a wider trip. The weather is warm, with average highs of about 21 to 23°C and relatively few rainy days, and the town’s accommodation is less busy than in January. Choose February for the warmest days, or March for evenings that get dark earlier, around 8pm. For a quieter trip, choose May to August, when the town’s accommodation is about half as busy as in January. Nights are then cold, with average lows of about 4°C from June to August: pack a warm layer for the walk between pools.
Once your dates are fixed, choose the time of day. If you want to soak after dark, from May to August there are hours to spare before last entry at the two lakefront spas in town. In December and January, a soak after dark means arriving close to their last entry times of 9:45 to 10pm.
- A soak after dark, May to August:
- From about 6pm
- A soak after dark, December and January:
- After about 9pm
- Fewer people at Polynesian Spa:
- Early morning, or after 8pm
- Best months for a wider Rotorua trip:
- February and March
- Quieter months in Rotorua:
- May to August, but cold
- Lake Rotoiti evening kayak to natural hot pools:
- November to April only
- Christmas Day:
- Polynesian Spa open; most others closed
- Most useful checks for your date:
- Evening rain, temperature and last entry
- About 5pm against 8:40pm sunset in mid-June against mid-January, so a winter evening soak is in the dark
- About 4°C against 13°C average low in July against February, so pack a warm layer for winter evenings
- About half as busy Rotorua's accommodation from May to August against January, in 2024 and 2025

How the time of day changes a soak
After dark. From mid-April to mid-September the sun sets between about 5pm and 6pm and it is dark half an hour later, so an evening soak after dinner is under a night sky, with hours to spare before the 10pm last entry at Polynesian Spa. In December and January the sun sets at about 8:20 to 8:40pm and it is not dark until about 9pm, which leaves about an hour or less before last entry at Polynesian Spa (10pm) and Wai Ariki (9:45pm). In midsummer, a soak around sunset is the easier plan.
Quieter hours. Polynesian Spa says early mornings and evenings after 8pm are the quietest times at its Deluxe Lake Spa, and that its pools in general are less busy first thing in the morning and in the middle of the day. Its Family Pools are managed at the door, and the spa warns of waits of 30 to 60 minutes at busy times.
Venues that close earlier. Not every pool keeps late hours. Waikite Valley Thermal Pools, about 30 minutes’ drive from town, are open from 10:30am to 8pm with last entry at 7pm, so they belong in the day. At Hell’s Gate the last mud bath entry is 7:30pm under its current hours of 10am to 9pm; earlier in 2026 it closed at 6pm, with last mud bath entry at 4:30pm, so check the hours before a winter visit. Wai Ariki’s last entry for its one-hour bathing is 9:45pm from November to April and 9:15pm from May to October.
How long to stay. Polynesian Spa suggests about two hours at the Deluxe Lake Spa, and no more than fifteen minutes at a time in the hotter pools, so plan an evening visit around its 10pm last entry.
Choosing a month for a wider Rotorua trip
The pools work in every season, so choose the month for what else you want to do in Rotorua. December to March is the warm part of the year, with average highs of about 21 to 23°C, long evenings and the Lake Rotoiti evening kayak running. Late December and January are the summer school holidays, and January was the busiest month for Rotorua’s accommodation in both 2024 and 2025. February and March keep the summer weather while the town’s accommodation is noticeably less busy.
April is still mild, at about 18°C, but wetter, with rain on about 9 days. From May to August average highs drop to 12 to 15°C, there are ground frosts on several nights a month, rain falls on 10 to 12 days a month, and Rotorua’s accommodation is about half as busy as in January. September to November warm up again, and November is the driest month, with about 87 mm of rain.

| May | 15°C and 7°C | 10 days, 130 mm | 5:13pm | 121,000 |
| June | 13°C and 4°C | 11 days, 132 mm | 5:01pm | 110,000 |

| August | 13°C and 4°C | 12 days, 125 mm | 5:38pm | 116,000 |
| September | 15°C and 6°C | 11 days, 107 mm | 6:04pm | 142,000 |
| October | 16°C and 7°C | 10 days, 93 mm | 7:31pm | 150,000 |
| November | 19°C and 9°C | 10 days, 87 mm | 8:04pm | 165,000 |
| December | 21°C and 12°C | 11 days, 117 mm | 8:33pm | 211,000 |
A day with rain here is one with at least 1 mm. The rain in millimetres is the total for the whole month, not a daily figure, and it says nothing about how many days were wet, which is why the day count sits beside it. Sunset times include daylight saving, which ends on the first Sunday in April and starts on the last Sunday in September, so early April and late September sit an hour away from the times shown. The visitor figures move from year to year: in 2024 January was again the busiest month, and May and June the quietest, at about half of January.
Rain matters less than it would on a walk, because you are wet in the pool anyway; it matters on the walk between pools and changing rooms, and it is most frequent from June to September. Frosts are the other winter feature, on about 7 to 10 nights a month from June to August.

Which soak suits which season
- The Polynesian Spa Deluxe Lake Spa works the same in every month, from 9am to 11pm. It has five hot mineral pools for sitting in, at 36 to 41°C, plus a cold plunge pool, ten geothermally heated recliners and an indoor lounge, and it takes all ages. On its GetYourGuide listing, one of the five pools is covered and another partly covered, which helps on a wet evening. Read our review.
- Wai Ariki’s one-hour Restorative Bathing is for guests aged 16 and over, and its later summer hours make it an easy evening soak from November to April.
- Hell’s Gate’s geothermal walk and mud spa is a daytime outing: the walk is outdoors, and the mud bath has the earliest last entry of the venues close to town, so check the hours for your date.
- The Lake Rotoiti evening kayak runs only from November to April: a guided evening paddle to natural hot pools on the lake shore, with a barbecue dinner and glowworms. Read our review.
For the late-opening options side by side, see our hot pools at night guide, and to compare every venue, our best hot pools in Rotorua page.
Check your date
Choose a date to see which of the main hot pools are open that day and until when, whether the Lake Rotoiti evening kayak is in season, any school or public holiday, what time it gets dark and the likely weather for an evening soak. Within about two weeks of the date the card shows the forecast; further ahead it shows long-term averages.
In general, Polynesian Spa is open every day from 9am to 11pm, Wai Ariki and Hell’s Gate close on Christmas Day, Secret Spot closes from 4pm on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day, and Waikite Valley closes on 25 and 26 December.
Opening hours are the venues’ own published hours. The forecast is from Open-Meteo for Rotorua, in New Zealand time; averages are NIWA figures for Rotorua. Sunset and dusk are calculated, so allow a few minutes either way. For weather warnings, check MetService’s Rotorua forecast.
If your booking has free cancellation, you can book once your dates are fixed and look at the forecast again before the deadline; read the specific booking terms before you rely on that.
How we know
Sources and method
- Weather: NIWA 1991–2020 averages for Rotorua (Rotorua Aero AWS, agent 1770, at 286 m on the eastern shore of Lake Rotorua), from the Figure.NZ copies of NIWA’s temperature and rainfall tables and NIWA’s 1991–2020 tables of wet days and ground frosts. These are thirty-year averages, not a forecast for any one day.
- Visitors: the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Accommodation Data Programme, total guest nights in commercial accommodation in the Rotorua District, 2024 and 2025 (release of 27 June 2026, via Figure.NZ). It counts stays in accommodation with six or more units, so it does not count holiday homes or small hosted stays, and it measures the town, not the pools.
- Hours and closures: read on the venues’ own websites on 23 October 2026: Polynesian Spa’s contact, FAQ and Deluxe Lake Spa pages; Wai Ariki’s FAQ; Hell’s Gate’s contact and FAQ pages (with an archived copy of February 2026 for the earlier hours); Secret Spot’s website; and Waikite Valley’s home page. Hell’s Gate’s current page gives 10am to 9pm without an end date, so the date checker shows those hours to 30 April 2027, the end of the summer hours it published in October 2026, and says when they are not yet published.
- The kayak season: the GetYourGuide listing for the same trip, which says it is available from November to April.
- Holidays: school terms from the Ministry of Education and public holidays from Employment New Zealand.
- Sunset and dark: calculated with the NOAA solar formula for Rotorua, with dark taken as the end of civil twilight, when the sun is six degrees below the horizon. Allow a few minutes either way.
- Forecast: the date checker reads Open-Meteo’s forecast for Rotorua for the evening, 5pm to 10pm.
- What we did not find: no venue publishes visitor numbers by month or by hour, so the quieter hours above are Polynesian Spa’s own advice, and the quieter months come from the accommodation figures.
Best Time for Rotorua Hot Springs: Questions
When is the best time to visit Rotorua's hot springs?
The pools are open year-round and the water temperature changes little with the season, so the time of day matters more than the month. For a soak after dark, go in the evening: from May to August it is dark by around 6pm, and in December and January not until about 9pm. If you are still choosing dates for Rotorua, February and March are especially good months for a wider trip, with average highs of about 21 to 23°C, relatively few rainy days and less busy accommodation than over the January holidays.
Are Rotorua's hot pools good in winter?
Yes, and they stay open. From May to August average highs are 12 to 15°C and evenings are cold, so the contrast with the hot water is at its strongest, and Rotorua's accommodation is about half as busy as in January. Some venues close earlier: Wai Ariki closes half an hour earlier in winter, at 10:30pm. Pack a warm layer, a hat and jandals for the walk between pools. See our night soaking guide.
What is the best time of day for Rotorua's hot pools?
The evening, if you want to soak under a night sky, and early morning if you want fewer people. In winter it is dark by around 6pm, with hours to spare before last entry. In December and January it is not dark until about 9pm, about an hour or less before last entry at Polynesian Spa (10pm) and Wai Ariki (9:45pm), so a soak around sunset is the easier plan in midsummer.
When is Polynesian Spa least busy?
Polynesian Spa says early mornings and evenings after 8pm are the quietest times at its Deluxe Lake Spa, and that its pools in general are less busy first thing in the morning and in the middle of the day. Its Family Pools are managed at the door, with waits of 30 to 60 minutes at busy times. The spa is open from 9am to 11pm every day, with last pool entry at 10pm.
When is Rotorua busiest?
January was the busiest month for Rotorua's accommodation in both 2024 and 2025, followed by December, during the summer school holidays. From May to August the town's accommodation is about half as busy as in January. These figures count stays in commercial accommodation across the Rotorua District, so they show how busy the town is, not how full a particular pool will be.
What is Rotorua's weather like by month?
Average highs run from about 12°C in July to 23°C in January and February, and average lows from about 4°C in July to 13°C in February. Rotorua gets about 1,356 mm of rain a year. July is the wettest month, at about 137 mm, and November the driest, at about 87 mm. Rain falls on about 8 days a month in summer and 11 to 12 in winter.
Does it snow in Rotorua?
Snow in the city itself is uncommon, but frosts are not: Rotorua averages about 7 to 10 ground frosts a month from June to August. Dress for a cold walk between pools on a winter evening, and check MetService's Rotorua forecast for warnings before you drive out of town.
Are Rotorua's hot pools open on Christmas Day?
Polynesian Spa is open every day, including public holidays, from 9am to 11pm. Wai Ariki and Hell's Gate close on Christmas Day, Secret Spot closes from 4pm on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day, and Waikite Valley closes on 25 and 26 December. Waikite also closes for annual maintenance from 9 to 23 February 2027. Our Waikite Valley guide has its details.
When does the Lake Rotoiti hot pools kayak run?
The guided evening kayak trip on Lake Rotoiti runs from November to April only. It includes a paddle to natural hot pools on the lake shore, a barbecue dinner and glowworms. Read our kayak review.
Can you go in Rotorua's hot pools when it rains?
Yes. You are wet in the pool anyway, so rain matters most on the walk between pools and changing rooms. At Polynesian Spa's Deluxe Lake Spa, one of the five hot pools is covered and another partly covered, according to its GetYourGuide listing. Rain is most frequent from June to September. If thunderstorms are forecast, check with the venue on the day.
Dates Fixed?
